I had a question I meant to ask before we hired our DC, so now it is obviously too late. Not that I am unhappy with the DC hire at all...I just don't know much about him.
I did a search and didn't see anything written about this, but if I am covering a previously discussed topic, I apologize.
I was wondering why we never pursued Joe Kines, former DC at Alabama. I am a big Alabama fan and Kines' defenses were consistently dominant, including a couple of top 5 finishes nationally...When Saban took over, many people hoped Saban would have the wisdom to keep Kines as DC, but Saban runs his own defense and Kines was moved to more of an administrator's role at Bama. It seems as though Texas A&M and Mike Sherman are likely to hire Kines as their DC, so this is likely a moot point...
This is from a Feb. 11 DMN article...
"Kines, 63, is a coaching lifer who has spent time at Clemson, Florida, Alabama and with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He returned to Alabama in 2003 as defensive coordinator and eventually was named the interim head coach for the Independence Bowl at the end of the 2006 season.
One of Kines' best moments in recent years was Alabama's 13-10 victory over Texas Tech in the 2006 AT&T Cotton Bowl. The Red Raiders' high-octane offense managed just 329 total yards against the Crimson Tide, which had the nation's No. 2-ranked defense. Tech averaged 495.8 yards for the season. "
Is/was he just too big a fish for us to pursue? I would have loved to have seen him coupling his aggresive defense with JJ's offense.
