This is the completely wrong way to look at this potential rule change. Such tackles are dangerous, and while the game itself is a violent one it is meant to be one for warriors, and not cowards who devastate enemies from behind. There is a saying among the samurai to "take arrows in your forehead, but never in your back." May the game never again be played with the ability to injure a player in such dishonorable a fashion.

the League should ban Roy Williams for his next horse collar tackle. he sure cant play D anymore

The horse collar penalty makes sense but some of the time changes are design to take us back to 2006. Crazy time rules designed to screw up the game. They do need to clarify the chop block. That is more dangerous than the horse collar (happens far more than a horse collar). All in all, I expect the majority of rule changes to make the game worse. I have no faith that the NCAA will do anything correct unless it is by pure accident.

This rarely happens in college ball anyways. I am frustrated that the college refs are now going to be teemed with making this call. Hard call to make sometimes, and I hate it when this one is called wrong.


Any word on the penalty? 15 yds? spot or scrimmage? Automatic 1st down, I assume?

If your analogy held any water - which it doesn't - it looks like it's the runner who would be the coward - wouldn't it. Seems the rules get the game closer to flag football every day.

Reduce the size of pads and remove those damned face masks and you'll remove a lot of the danger. While we're at it, could we get rid of sideline warnings. Next thing, we'll have the officials flagging us for un-SMU-like attire in the stands. Let's get them proficient at calling things on the field that pertain to the game. then we'll see if they can branch out.

Why the horse-collar rule after all these years? It's why I love soccer so much. It's a pure game with little if any change over the years. And, now with Americans getting into it, they're considering a change to the off-side rule. We could screw up anything with enough effort.

First, your tone is ridiculous and you should be ashamed. Second, there is no perfect analogy for the sport of American football as relating to pre-industrial Japan, but I do believe this maxim still holds truth even when reinterpreted so as to not apply directly to feudal warfare. Did not the Jesuits claim that the Bible has something to say about today and not simply regarding the man you call Jesus? You believe your culture can be reinterpreted as to the times, but yet you look down on the same practice in other traditions. Utter hypocrisy! What is wrong with the way the game is played? The more rules they make the more complicated it gets. Everyone on the field has pads on, everyone takes a risk(including the qb). Football is a dangerous sport. If you dont like it or dont want your child getting hurt, its simple, dont watch/play anymore. While were at it, why dont we just tack qb sacks completely out of the game and give them a flag to pull?
