According to JJ, time of possession is the most over rated statistic in football and I tend to believe the same thing. JJ runs a quick strike offense. It isn't unusual for the R&S to march down 80 yards in less than a minute and score a TD. First and 30 does not worry anyone because of the R&S. You can score from anywhere on the field. Gaining 10 yards for a first down is as easy as gaining 30 yards for a first down.

This means that the defense is on the field alot more and the opponent's offense has the ball most of the time. The defense's purpose is to create turnovers and get the ball back so the offense can score. Its a fact of JJ's brand of exciting football.

SMU could be losing by 2 TDs with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter and the opponent has the ball. A turnover and 2 quick TDs and SMU will be back in the game. If it goes into OT, the R&S will win it because it is designed as a quick strike scoring machine. It can score from anyplace on the field.

The R&S combined with an attacking D makes time of possession look exagerated and a nonfactor. It comes to the point that the defense is actually part of the offense. Traditionalists of the defensive football concept will go nuts but its really exciting.

Time of possesion really doesnt matter as much in CFB as it does in the NFL. but if youre playing a powerhouse Offense, then it means a great deal because you need to keep them off the field.

UGA dominated UH all across the board. They were the better team too. they kept JJs high octane O off the field for most of the game

I hate to say it, but the Hawaii OTs got punked by UGA and JJ didn't make the necessary adjustments. Some said the UGA DL could read the snap. Some say that JJ was day dreaming about SMU. I knew Hawaii was going to lose and the OTs was the weakest part of the offense. UGA has a pro caliber DL and they deserve to be ranked #1 this season.

The same thing happened last year against OSU. The OL got punked by the OSU DL and Hawaii had better OTs in 2006.

But it doesn't matter anymore. I cheer for SMU now y'all!

Time of possession only matters when you lose. If you have it 1 minute and win then no one cares.

It would have been nice to see time of possession broken down by time that you actually are running plays vs. waiting on the indecisiveness of your coaching staff.

However you do make legitimate reference to the weakness of the Warrior O-Line that was totally exposed in the Sugar Bowl as it was to lesser degree in the OSU game in 2006. In both games Colt Brennan was under extreme attack. However in the OSU game JJ did have a workable adjustment he could make. Nate Ilaoa a 5'9" 250 pound RB who rushed 131 times for 990 and 13 TD's in 2006. He was on the bench with a sprained ankle. In the second quarter JJ put Nate in the game and he alleviated most of the pressure rushing for close to 100 yards. Brennan went on to throw for 350 - 400 yards and three or four TD's. The Warriors were beaten by a single touchdown if I recall correctly, sorry I can't seem to access last years specifics.

My point both JJ and Colt knew what they needed but they did not have the Competitive O-Line or the likes of Nate Ilaoa. They both took their lumps without complaint or Blame in the press or blog, very professional.

Hawaii lost by *3* points to Oregon State. They had the ball to end the game but Colt was short on the 4th down pass (WR was wide open for the first down inside the 20-yard-line). Hawaii missed 2 field goals and dropped a TD pass. Colt threw an INT at the 1-yard line. Does that game sound anything like the Georgia game?

Hawaii outgained Oregon State 504 to 316. The biggest irony of bringing up the Oregon State as a "failure" of Hawaii's OL is that this thread is about time of possession and Hawaii WON the time of possession battle in that game! Hawaii had the ball for 38:16 while Oregon State had the ball for 21:44. Hence, Hawaii DOMINATED the time of possession.

It is hard for me to conclude that the OL got "punked" in that game when Hawaii dominated time of possession, had 504 yards on offense, scored 32 points despite Nate Ilaoa being hurt and missing 2 FGs.

Nice piece of trivia for that game: Hawaii did not punt the entire game.
