Anyone know why the opener is on friday? Did I read that wrong? Rice and SMU don't want to compete with opening HS friday night football in Texas do they?

Anyone know why the opener is on friday?

Because ESPN offered the national exposure.

That has changed over the last 5-8 years with the zero week being added to the schedule. It's usually the last weekend of August. Not everybody does it but more and more hs teams are because they like having the bye mixed into their season.

Most schedules I've seen for next season start on that same weekend.

I know Longview opens @ Allen on the 29th.

Rice SMU will be the first game of the college football season - ESPN offered to air it and we took it.

Last year there were a few games "zero week", but most waited until after labor day.

All I have to say is national exposure cannot hurt you at all, unless you totally crap the bed. I think the guys will come out fired up and win this since we looked awful on ESPN last year vs TT and UH
