Justin has a special place in my heart, such a nice guy that comes from very good parents. We all are so proud of him. Glad to see that he got the bonus.

I played against Justin in YSA football when we were kids in rural East Texas and we good friends at SMU. No tellin' how many dips of Kodiak he owes me. One of the best all around people you will ever meet. We need more of those type kids at SMU. Being from a tiny East Texas town and knowing how important football is to that area and this state as a whole, it'd be nice if we were able to be more attractive to small town Texas kids in our student population. Instead I can't tell you how many times I went to games as a student and sat next to a drunken frat guy with a popped collar that didn't know what a first down was. Not exactly the kind of educated fanbase I was hoping for when I arrived.

You expected an educated fanbase at SMU? Why, you figured people who were serious football fans were picking SMU as their school based on the recent success we have had? You are only a few years younger than me if you came to SMU about the same time as Justin meaning everyone in your class knew and knows SMU as a school that sucks at football.

Hopefully that is changing...

Reply to Mustang1,con==When these guys were recuited, the families and players were told by Bennett. "We have a brand new program and we want you to be part of this and that we can be top 25 in nation ."and blab, blab. He was good at blab, blab. So the last 5 seasons was not so hot. But you have to admit there was at one time hope. Most families never read Ponyfans, maybe if they did, we wouldn't have got the good players we did and still have. So now we are hoping and praying that JJ can really Coach and turn this program around. If my guys can hang in there I feel the fans can too. I Love football.

Stangdad,

I played for Lone Oak. That's my hometown. I used to always tease Justin at SMU about beating Commerce when I was in like the 5th or 6th grade. If Justin is your kid then let me congratulate you. I'm thrilled for all the success he's had b/c I saw how hard he worked for it.

To MustangIcon,

I know that your average SMU student didn't pick SMU b/c of the football program. But damn we had some guys that acted like they'd never seen the sport! I'm sure that every school has these type of kids, but lets all be honest, we have a BUNCH of them at SMU. There's nothing wrong with that, but as a kid from small town Texas it would be nice if we had a little bit of rural flavor at SMU. Its a minor beef b/c I loved my time at SMU and look back on those years fondly.

Yeah, put that collar down occasionally and don't be afraid to throw the Wranglers on. I never felt at home with the BMW thing myself. More of a pickup truck kind of guy.

ponyboy,

Thank you! Luckily there was a contigent of the country boy type at SMU that I could get along with. But the 18 year old kid driving a 50K automobile with aviators and rainbow sandals looks a little pretentious. But hey, it takes all kinds right?

I guess so. As long as he's got a little Jerry Jeff or George Strait on that BMW car radio.

I don't know. I think that's where part of our image as a "spoiled rich kid school" probably has some merit. Obviously there are kids from wealthy families that attend Texas, A&M, TCU, Baylor, etc. I've seen several BMW's in the UT student parking garage when I've been down there. But lets be honest folks. Perception is reality in the minds of many.

Of course SMU is in Dallas and Dallas is a very image oriented city. There's a reason why Dallas as a city has one of the worst credit scores in the nation. Luckily as a kid of two school teachers from East Texas I didn't have to worry about the rich kid image! But when I would tell people that I went to SMU they would always ask me why I wanted to rub elbows with those snotty rich kids. Now obviously that is an ignorant statement and I just brushed it off as such. But I know some of you have had to answer the same question. I guess the thing is that every school has a reputation, whether founded on perception or reality, that they have to struggle with. I just wish we were able to appeal to the common man a little bit more.

I sure want to second the motion that Justin is a great representative of the Mustangs. I think the recognition of his talent by first New England and then Dallas makes the rest of the league sit up and take notice. Couple that with Coach Jones and his contacts in the NFL and new recruits will take notice.

Congrats to my friend Stangdad for the great job raising a fine son first and a great football player second.
