So what are the odds Thomas Morestead wins the Ray Guy Award?

Well, if you look at last years standings after the season was over (and certainly after they picked finalists) Morstead was ranked ahead of 2 (IIRC) of the finalists and ranked 2nd nationally for net yardage.
That is, IIRC. I think he has a really good shot to at least be a finalist, barring a early season FUBAR he has to recover from. If it wasn't for a few oopsies this year, he probably would've been #1 nationally.

About 0.1% chance, it will go to a BCS member just because they were punting against better competition.

HA!
Depressingly enough, you might be right. I find it hard to believe there's a punter out there who's much better than Morstead.

Let's hope he's no where close to winning it due to not meeting a minimum number of attempts...

He was 6 in the nation in 2007 in total average, I couldn't find net average and % inside the 20.
Those are the three stats the Ray Guy committee uses for it's basis.

if the guy from baylor can win it, so can Thomas...itll all come down to how good we are on the field. if this is a bowl team...he might be on the semi finalist list but if we dont even win 6 games. it wont happen.

In addition to his outrageous distance, he also has to somehow earn attention for his ridiculous ability to down the ball inside the 20- or sometimes even the 20-yard line. That's a rare skill that might earn him a paycheck punting in a couple of years.

I agree that national honors tend to go to players from teams that are successful. Those teams tend to be in the spotlight more, and a lot of voters seem to give extra credit to those who perform well in a winning effort.
SMU getting on TV more often (initially due to interest in JJ, more appearances will depend on wins) will help SMU players get more awards...which feeds into recruiting...which leads to success on the field...which leads to more TV...and the circle continues. A big bonus for the run-and-shoot is that it is quite TV-friendly and extra TV appearances for a team has an effect on that team's future prospects.
