Is it traditional for the new coaching staff to meet with the parents? I've spoke to several parents and they all have some of the same questions and concerns. We mothers know that the kids are suppose to be adults, but we would like to hear from the new coaches about there expectations for our sons on and off the field.

If your son is a current Mustang player, by all means, that is part of the coach's job.

His son is the great Derrius Bell who will be s sophomore, I believe.

Well in that case I'm sure you could call and talk with Derrius' coach and ask any questions you have. I would probably start with the DB's coach, Derrick Odum.

In the Bennett era he met with the parents and told them not to call them about the status of their son's playing time. There were exceptions as some parents were very buddy buddy with the coaches. Other parents were often avoided and ignored. Some coaches even would dodge parents and pretend to not know them. It wasn't much of a "family" atmosphere unless you were the over involved parent. Parents weren't allowed at practice and really shouldn't be unless. There were the "leach" parents that couldn't let go of their babies. I think we know who those parents are, they often post on this board.

I wouldn't think it's that common but I read the book about June Jones, Mouse Davis, their coaching buddies and Hawaii football & it definitely seems like they make a point to get to know players and their families so they know what makes everyone ticks...I wouldn't be worried

Some parents of Hawaii players *never* miss a practice, which is fine because anyone is welcome to watch. The parents can be harder on the players than the coaches, but for the most part the parents seem content on letting the coaches coach.

I don't see a problem talking to coaches, but talking about their playing time should be moot -- if they aren't playing, then they aren't cutting it.

From past comments I believe the Bells and a couple of other parents are much more concerned with proper discipline and oversight of their child, not playing time.

I received an invitation to attend a meeting for the Mustang Football Families on Saturday morning at 9:30. I'm not sure if this is for the new recruits or the entire team. From what I can tell this will be the forum for parents to ask questions about the program.

Am I a leach because my son will always be my baby? Brings to mind a book that I used to read to Evan titled "Love You Forever". Guess it must be a "mom" thing and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Mrs H, just ignore Cash's quote....you definitely have to let coaches coach but if we've got competent coaches like we do now, it won't be a problem. There were plenty of problems with Bennett's tenure and we ought to just let those days go...
