i would love to play that OCC as a NonBCS school. might as well be as competitive as possible before conference starts.

Make no mistake, when we were scheduling the big boys a few years ago, it was Copeland's doing at the direction of the of the administration in an effort to curb the deficit to quel the faculty.

So, when you think I am wrong and you want to schedule the "big boys," just remember the company you keep: the faculty.

i understand where you're coming from totally about building a soft OC schedule. its best for the teams that arent in the tops of their conference. ie SMU...but we do schedule a Big XII school every year.

My take on this is that you should ALWAYS have one top opponent non-conference.

You don't get any better without challenging yourself. Plus, it helps with recruiting, brings money into the athletic department, and gets the school some recognition with national television coverage.

Regardless, even if your team sucks, what is the difference if you lose to Arkansas State or to Florida? I'd rather lose to Florida, actually.


There is something to be said for having a softer schedule when getting out of the gutter. However, schedules are made many years in advance, so that isn't really something most schools can predict practically. (Granted, SMU is a special case--and once we are getting to be bowl worthy, that extra win might be necessary.) But still, the hope should be that even if we start scheduling some tougher opponents today, we will be drastically improved by the time we get to that schedule five or six years down the road (and hopefully already have a bowl game under our belt!)

People in Nebraska are furious about the scheduling done by the former AD. He kept one tough game each year, but scheduled Florida Intl's for the other three. While it won't be a bad deal this year while they try to right the ship, they are stuck with it for years. I guess that's what we get for hiring an AD from the Big East! (Same theory the Big 10 uses--and how Ohio St. keeps slipping in the backdoor to lose the NC game.)

......So happy TO is back. Setting up these 2-1 deals was his specialty, and Southern Miss has done it with Nebraska a couple of times. It's a good deal for them, and the games in Hattiesburg are always a little tense!

JJ always wanted to play a few tough nonconference games each year at Hawaii. Last season Hawaii had a horrible schedule, but that was NOT what JJ wanted. People only remember the weak 2007 schedule, but in 2006 Hawaii played at Alabama, and home vs. Purdue and Oregon State as their nonconference games. In 2008, Hawaii plays at Florida, at Oregon State, and home vs. Washington State and Cinci. So, the 2007 schedule was pretty much just an anomoly.

Little trivia: JJ was working with Leach at Texas Tech to try to get a Hawaii vs. Texas Tech game for quite some time. Hawaii's (now fired) AD actually turned Texas Tech down for a game despite JJ trying hard to get them scheduled. It is nice that JJ will finally get to face Texas Tech...but the SMU team this year will be quite different than the Colt-led WAC Champs last season.

Lots of schools are willing to play Hawaii at HOME. Nobody with real aspirations these days want any part of Hawaii at Hawaii.

Next year, we play Navy, a bowl team, Texas Tech, who won their New Year's Day game and are expected to be even better next year, and TCU.

We've added Missouri to the schedule in future years, you know, the one that should have been in the BCS last year. Texas A& M is back on the schedule in 2010 or 11. I'm not sure that having Nebraska on your schedule right now looks all that tough, although with Pelini, they should be better.

So our list of foes since the 2000 season looks at least as good as Souther Miss. Here's the paragraph you could write about SMU:

it was michigan and USC. michigan actually backed out of their contract and we all know how that worked out when they replaced them with appalachian state
