Miles Brand talks about athletic budgets

Postby Webmaster » Wed May 14, 2008 11:36 pm

The NCAA Prez was on ESPN radio Wednesday night, and was asked about a number of topics, including the idea many have that college athletes should be paid. Brand's response was a little surprising: he pointed out that a nominal fee of a few hundred bucks a month would do nothing to dissuade athletes from accepting the millions being thrown their way by the professional leagues and shoe companies.

Besides, Brand said, ONLY SIX SCHOOLS HAVE AN ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT THAT OPERATES IN THE BLACK.

I knew a lot of schools lost money, but didn't realize the number of profitable athletic departments was THAT small. He said every other school in the country has to subsidize its athletic department, and paying athletes would further cripple the economic structure of schools across the country.
"It’s hard to overstate how impressive SMU has been on the recruiting trail since the ACC announced the Mustangs would be joining the league”
