SMU v Notre Dame Still a Possibility?

Interesting comment by ND AD Kevin White in today's DMN:
Notre Dame won't play Arizona State at the new Cowboys stadium in Arlington until 2013. Even so, Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White said the school would consider bringing another game to Arlington if the conditions were right.
"We're euphoric about playing in the new stadium," White said. "From all reports, it's going to be unbelievable. I think the whole Notre Dame family has expressed great excitement about being down here."
Stay tuned.

No way QB Jimmy Clausen would get his hair gel through airport security!
Come to think of it, how the hell does he fit inside a helmet?

After looking at the future schedules
http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/future_schedules/ it looks like 2011 would be the first year we could get in. We have 4 non-conference games lined up in 09 & '10 (plus 8 conference games =12). They play in San Antonio in 2009 (and their schedule seems to be full) so best case scenario is 2010 if we break an agreement with Tech, Missouri, TCU, or Navy. Not sure how likely that is but a 2 year agreement in 2011-2012 would get them here for two extra years. Of course, we wouldn't be able to beat the Razorbacks or Aggy to the punch. Thoughts?

According to the SMU athletic department, there are no 'open dates' in the Mustangs' schedule for at least a decade...at least, that's what was said when Hawai'i contacted SMU about scheduling a game.

I hope we can schedule a marquee non-conference opponent here in the next few years.

If possible, SMU would bump somebody, to get ND.

Playing Baylor, Navy, etc. do absolutely nothing for me. I wish our scheduling had the balls to go after a Texas, OU, LSU, etc. How much fun would that be?

The problem with UT and OU is that neither one of them need a Dallas game. And now, A&M and Arkansas do not either. SMU has a great recruiting base to bargain with. You would think that a PAC-10 or Big-10 school might be interested in a little more Texas talent.

Arizona under Mike Stoops recruits Texas heavily, though he may be fired soon since they have been pretty awful since he started. UA might be the most decent match-up from the Pac-10. Wasn't TCU able to schedule Stanford this year?

Rule 1- a game against an ACC team of Pac 10 team in Dallas makes little financial sense when you combine the added visitors fee and the lack of visiting fans that would attend. The Pac 10 doesn't even travel well East for Bowl Games. The Big 12, SEC West and even Big 10 (with plenty of transplants) makes better sense if you want to play the big boys.

What the hell. Schedule Michigan or Ohio State!

I hate it when we get thumped on national TV. Let's keep quiet until we get good enough to compete with the big boys.

I disagree. Notre Dame was horrible in 2007, and while I'm not saying we'd roll out there and beat the Irish, we wouldn't get thumped, either. Plus, the NotredameBroadcastingCompany might even feel compelled to say something nice about Coach Jones .... in front of the legions of sheep who watch that stupid team - including recruits. I would think if we can get Notre Dame on the schedule, we should. I'm not one of those who thinks that all publicity is good publicity, but in this case, it would be advertising that we just couldn't otherwise buy. Throw one of those "this is SMU commercials" on NBC in each quarter, and it's worth risking a loss that would interrupt our otherwise perfect record!

With UT, OU, A&M and AR not possibilities, our goal should be a BCS team, who will draw in Dallas. This excludes PAC 10, Big Ten, Big East or ACC.
First priority should be ND with a national alumni base. If not possible, a Big XII school makes the most sense, as well as nearby LSU. I don't think LSU would need a Big D date, so beyond the usual TT or Baylor, my focus would be Okla State, Missouri, Kansas or KSU. Any would draw here.
Lastly, I love the academies with a preference for Navy. Air Force isn't an option, since they will be going to Fort Worth.
