I know JW is back but what about Hudman? Is he back? Neither one of them is on the official roster on the web site ... but that could be due to problems in the sports information office ...

(don't get me started ... please stay focused on topic)

... Ok, what about Bryce?

And whatever happened to Columbus Givens?

Did Columbus transfer on his own......or was he forced to because of poor grades?

My understanding is that he transferred on his own. I remember hearing things like "he wasnt really happy here" and "UTEP (his new school) recruited him hard out of high school" so based on what i remember i don't think grades played too big of a role.

Grades were the problem for Givens, SMU had to get a waiver from the NCAA for Givens to play last year. In return, he had specific things he had to do in the classroom to remain eligble. Givens did not keep his end of the bargain.

Gumbo's SMU Legacy: his brave battle with a nasty virus notwithstanding, I keep seeing him dropping a sure TD pass vs TCU when he was a true freshman.

I didn't realize that was Givens, but I definitely remember that play. I don't remember ever seeing a drop that bad even going back to middle school football.

If I had to make a 10 second video summarizing SMU football since 1989 that play might sum it up best.

Except that was a game we won. Catch that pass, and make a couple of other plays, it could've easily been a 35-3 win.

Actually, I think the play back in 1999 against Tulane in New Orleans where the Kick Returner,I don't remember who, tried to catch the kick and mishandled it at the 1 and let it roll into the end zone. He then picked the ball up and then kneeled in the end zone, thinking he was going to get a touchback. Unfortunately, he only got called for a safety. To me, that would define SMU football since 1989.

Gumbo gets a sick pass in my opinion for his entire career at smu. football aside, i'm just glad the kid can keep pursuing a college degree. we could be easily talking about a guy who couldnt beat the virus, so wish him luck instead of ragging on him.

Givens worst drop was at A&M his freshman year. Wide open down the line with the game still somewhat close. Kid could have caught the ball and done cartwheels into the endzone he was so wide open.

I am surprised that SMU granted his release to a league competitor though
