Gary Patterson Talks About SMU on DFW SportsbeatProducers showed video of SMU Mustangs' practicing over Patterson's audio.
Host Brad Tinker asks: June Jones comes in as a bit of a 'folk hero' with a team that won only 1 game. There are HUGE expectations over in Dallas. What can he do with a 1-win team? Patterson replies: Well, I think that's why you do change coaches. Obviously, June's had success everywhere he's been. I know him very well. He's a good man and he's been successful in doing what he does. I think that gives him a great opportunity and I think that's what you're looking for. You're looking for opportunity in Dallas just like when I took over 8 years ago. You know, I know there's a lot of people who said 'Well, this guy's never been a head coach' and 'What can he do?' So, time will tell.
If you missed it, here is the video from Coach Patterson's interview:

ROTFLMAO ![]() Ya'll think anyone's got the guts to play this on the JumboTron at Ford before this year's match-up between SMU & TCU?
Gary Patterson has few social skills. He is a "look what I can do" person. He has had success in the Ws vs Ls department, but there is no doubt that he is a complete jerk with which to work - and, obviously, the word is out on him - no school is eager to hire him away from TCU.
Yes, I loved this quote from Patterson, "You're looking for opportunity in Dallas just like when I took over 8 years ago." The difference is that he was a coordinator on a hugely successful team who only had to keep things going in the same direction. (And to his credit has). He makes it sound like he was established and highly-sought-after like Jones and was just looking for the right opportunity to come along.
My thoughts exactly. The situations are entirely different, but I wouldn't expect Gary to get that.
The man wins. We have not.
I don't care for Lumpy out in Lubbock or Steve Spurrier, but I am absolutely impressed with their ability to take an underperforming team and bring success to it. Patterson did that at TCU. It is appropriate that he comment on SMU's situation and that the gist of the interview/converstion turn back to his experience in making that happen in Ft. Worth. It is both his point of reference and relevance. just beat TCU with the same consistency they have beaten SMU during the Patterson era-then we will have credibility in judging his self-promotion skill.. stable-boy for the four horsemen of the apocalypse
Franchione had them "turned around" before Patterson took over, and he inherited some guy nicknamed LT...which probably helped get things going just a little bit.
Actually, Franchione inherited LT from Pat Sullivan. Patterson had him for one game, the Liberty Bowl. Franchione took some decent kids and made them better, but 4 - 10+ win seasons in the past 6 years, well that puts Patterson in a class all his own. I'm amazed at how the nice things Gary said about June and SMU can be turned around and made to sound like he said the guy is an [deleted] and he'll never have success over in Dallas. What kind of inferiority complex do you have?
It does, you're right. I suppose what he meant to say was that he wished the same sort of success on SMU that TCU has seen. If so, it's a noble gesture. Still the situation is obviously different. Jones is starting from rock bottom, Sullivan more than had a push start. You have every reason to be proud of what he did with it.
