i talked to an old friend of mine yesterday and he had some very interesting news about an exciting possibility for Mustang Football...

the lead i got...

great follow up...

For those of y'all who are unfamiliar with Nick Foles he is from Austin and went to Westlake HS where he broke most of the passing records previously established by another WHS QB y'all might have heard of, Drew Brees.

Nick is just over 6'5" a big guy with a cannon for an arm who i consider as good as Ryan Mallet, Nick didn't get much attention early because he was a 2 sport athlete, competing at a very high level in basketball in AAU tournys instead of attending QB camps in the summer early in HS.

I asked him yesterday about possibly coming to SMU and he said that he is considering it but keep in mind he was just released and everything i am saying about him an SMU is tenetive at best. However i am excited that we are on his radar.

As a fan this is a possibility that is extremely exciting given his ability and the fact that we have Junes Jones. Obviously he would not be available till the next season but i think Nick would give us a legitimate shot at righting the ship.

Knowing Nick, i really hope that he finds the best possible place for him that allows him to be close to his family, he a character guy in every sense of the word and i only want to see him succeed wherever he goes. But being a Current SMU student, clearly, i want to see him come to Dallas.

Are you sure we want this kid? It sounds like he just didn't like the competition. Did he have any Texas offers before he chose MS? There will definetly be competition here, also. Sounds a little bit like a cry baby to me.

Finally figured out how this pertained to us. There's a comment posted after the second story:

i feel really bad for nick, i haven't gotten the whole story but this is the 2nd time he has been more or less betrayed by a program he had commited himself to...and keep in mind he takes that very seriously, he's a great guy who was raised right...in any case this happened when he had committed to ASU and Erickson came in, he was promised he was the only recruit of the class and then they reneged and signed someone late...it just does not make sense to have 3 Qb's in the same class, like Mr. Foles mentioned...speaking from a fan's perspective only i really hope he comes to Dallas to join June Jones and put SMU back on the path to glory...PONY UP!

Nick is anything but a Crybaby and he is more talented then the starting QB at MSU right now, but it just does not makes sense to have 3 qb's in the same class no matter how good or bad the competition is...ASU screwed him over when erickson was hired when they reneged on a commitment to not recruit another QB in his class, it was all last minute so MSU was really a backup option that looked like it was possibly a good fit, but he wants to be closer to home...Ole Miss and Texas were right there for a period of time before ASU offered him and Mac Brown fumbled like has did with Brees.

Rumor has it Mack Brown and Bobby Bowden already are recruiting Deion Sanders Jr., a CB/RB/WR/QB at Trinity Christian Academy in Cedar Hill. I think he's only 14 or 15.

Anyone who watched the SLC - Westlake game two years ago could see that this kid can PLAY. I was more impressed with Foles than I was with Riley Dodge...which is saying a lot because that was the infamous Riley Dodge vomit game.

I'd be worried about a couple of things if he did come here. First, is he really able to handle the competition?

And secondly...

I asked him yesterday about possibly coming to SMU and he said that he is considering it but keep in mind he was just released and everything i am saying about him an SMU is tenetive at best.

Great, so we have a current student (not a member of the media) asking a potential recruit about coming to SMU. Not good.

no one currently on the roster or who might be in the next year has the physical tools or the talent that Foles does at QB

So say he does come here and Carr or Nunes commit to SMU... Is he going to transfer again?

given the complexity of the situation and the timing im not suggesting anything more than the fact that he might be considering SMU

That's true, but having physical tools alone does not a quarterback make.
Example A: Ryan Leaf
