DMN: SMU's WILLIS RETURNS AFTER TEAM SUSPENSION

from the DMN:

As expected, SMU junior quarterback Justin Willis will be back with the Mustangs this fall.

Coach June Jones said Tuesday that Willis, a two-year starter, has fulfilled requirements to rejoin the team since being suspended in February and missing spring practice. The suspension was related to academic concerns and missing team functions.

Jones has said since late March that he expected Willis to be back to compete for the starting job.

"He's hopefully learned a very hard lesson, and he showed a lot of character," Jones said. "He took the hard way out."

Willis has passed for 51 career touchdowns. He set a school season record for total offense with 3,643 yards in 2007, and his 2,944 yards passing ranks third in a season at SMU.

Jones hasn't ceded the starting job to Willis, saying the best quarterback will play. Redshirt freshman Logan Turner led SMU during spring camp. Incoming freshmen, including Katy's Bo Levi Mitchell, could also be in the mix.

Welcome back, Justin!

Now get to work - on the practice field, in the weight room, in class and any other place the coaches tell you. You've given us a lot to cheer about in your first two years, but we expect more - much more - in the years to come.

I hope to read that Justin is the first to get to practice every day and the last to leave, and sitting in the front row of every class.

Justin, you've got a lot of fans out here who a pulling for you. Don't let us down, don't let your teammates down and don't let your coaches down. You can put that touchdown passes record out of reach for a long time. We're pulling for you.

Glad to hear it. This is good for Justin and for the team. Still, I don't want anything handed to him. He's a talented QB for sure, but he missed out on the entire spring. Good work Justin and keep it up.

Now he really has his work cut out for him. He has to EARN the starting job.

Jones had announced this well over a week, or maybe even 2 weeks ago. I am surprised the DMN is just now reporting. There are some old posts about it somewhere down the page.

My apologies for reporting 'old news'. But, as mrydel said, it's the DMN. What do you expect? The story said "Coach Jones said Tuesday..." so it sounded like 'new news'. I should know better than to read anything the DMN reports as 'gospel'.

Look at it this way people, The DMN at least devoted almost 1/2 of a page to SMU that day. Above it was the story about the SMU BB trip to Africa. Between the 2 articals was a piece about "how good the policing of athlete's paychecks" is at OU. We got some attention and any Big 12 fan had to see the SMU articals. We got some needed coverage in The DMN.
