Chip Brown

Chip Brown's on the radio here locally (in Austin), has an everyday show.

I'm in the car for such brief periods of time I rarely get lazy and don't change the station during commercials. But a few months back I did get lazy and leave the local ESPN affiliate on, but seeing as I was being lazy I wasn't really paying attention. Well they had a commercial for his show, and I could have sworn they said, "former SMU tennis player, Chip Brown."

Now I know, for a fact, he was a tennis player.... and after hearing that and questioning it, I kind of remembered maybe reading on here that Chip went to SMU. But I can't be sure. I found a short bio on him on the DMN's website, says he's from Michigan so maybe the promo said MSU.... but why woulndn't they have said Michigan State.

Anyway, really I'm just curious, anybody know the story here? Did University of Texas beat writer go to SMU? Or was I not paying attention and filling in the blanks with something familiar?

I've heard he went to SMU, too. So did DMN's Keith Whitmire.

EDIT: They both sho' eat up with UT now though. Whitmire flipped his vote to give UT Cal's spot in the Rose Bowl. What a crime.

Yeah, I knew about Whitmire. Also, the MDN has a rule about not covering your own school, hence Whitmire never covering the Mustangs. I ran into him at the final pre-season scrimmage a few years back.

That was a crime that year. I'm a big Cal fan myself, probably my number 2 in terms of college. My Dad wen there for grad school... back in the 60s, to boot!

Keith Whitmire is as good as they come. He is a loyal Mustang. He goes to a lot of SMU events because he cares and not because he covers them.

If I recall, Texas won that Rose Bowl (and won the national championship the next year); Cal lost their bowl game that season.

Yeah they lost to Texas Tech. That was a painful game (the Cal v. Texas Tech game).

Yeah, Kieth Whitmire definitely loves the Mustangs.

Also, Eddie Sefko -- mainly a Mavs guy, but he's a jack of all trades for them -- went to SMU. He chimed in on the DMN blog after JJ's hiring.

Texas would have wiped the floor with that overrated Cal team. Tech beat this hell out of em didn't they.

Yes, they did. It was pathetic. But of course, you were rooting the other way, so I'm sure you were pleased as punch. That season of course featured my favorite school football promo ads ever - the first time I saw it, I'm not kidding, I fell out of my chair.... I know I've shared this a handful of times on this site, but here it is again:

...

So I guess I should take it as read that Chip did, indeed, go to SMU?

Yup — he worked for the Daily Campus in the mid-1980s.

UT only beat Tech by 16 points — which, when you're talking about 59-43 isn't that much — so who knows how bad the Cows would have beaten Cal. They both were overrated.

Cool. Good to know. I'll start being the annoying guy that calls to talk SMU football after every win next season. Okay, so I won't be that guy... but yeah, good to know.

DO IT! Can you imagine all of those Cowfans getting worked up about it?

When some UT punk runs for 100 yards in a game next year, call in and ask him how the guy compares to Dickerson "when you were at SMU."

Do it over and over and over again. You'll have to use different names and call from different numbers, but you could really carve a niche for yourself in Austin sports lore.

Wouldn't that be classic?

Use names like Hickory, Juan Pablo, Sven, Rheinhardt, Cappy, Hubie, Cletus, Rex, Rocky, Hutch, Nelson, Giancarlo, Ricky Joe Bob.... etc.

I chose Hickory up there because I had a high school buddy who called in to the post game shows after Mavs games as "Hickory" with a totally fake backwater accent. It was greatness.

Or I could choose snooty "SMU beamer driving names" like Parker, Wellington, Sebastian, or Hurst.

I suppose having the granddaddy of all bowls ripped away from you can have a detrimental effect on one's motivation, no?

Cal deserved the Rose Bowl. Doesn't matter at all how the games eventually came out.

I like it. If you go with Hickory one week, use Jimmy Chitwood another. Some other possibilities: Pete Mitchell. Pat Garrett. Bill Roberts (your friends call you "Brushy." Wes Hightower. Man, you could have fun with that.

I see Whitmire at SMU football games all the time. I don't know Chip Brown but he was a tennis player at SMU and now the biggest UT fan on the planet.
