Just wanted to remind anyone considering attending the SMU @ UTEP game on Sat Nov 15 that they should go ahead and reserve a room now because the better hotels fill up on game weekends. Plus you can always cancel for free with a 24 hour notice if needed.

Some SMU fans are staying at the Embassy Suites El Paso which is fairly close to the airport. This hotel is going through a renovation that should be completed by Nov.

We decided to stay at the Hilton Garden Inn El Paso which is basically across the street from the UTEP campus and a mile from the stadium. This hotel is less than two years old and gets very high reviews on TripAdvisor.com.

Depending on what hotel you stay in, look out back. There's a hotel near the UTEP campus with what basically amounts to a pile of rocks behind it, and there are some residents who look a lot like this:


Pretty cool, really.

El Paso is home to one of the cooler high school stadiums in the state. El Paso Cathedral, the stadium is dug into a hill side and opens up to the view of the city. It was a very cool setting for football.... I don't recall whether that was Cathedrals own stadium, or a local shared stadium, EP Pony Fan can you shed a light on that?

As a senior in the marching band I went to our game against Cathedral, when my high school - Dallas Jesuit - chartered a jet for the football team, cheerleaders, a reduced travel band and some boosters. It was a hectic trip, but that sure was a cool high school stadium.

That place get's to rockin' on a Saturday night, should be a fun road trip!

It's funny driving to Colorado, taking the route from Dallas that puts you through, what? Amarillo? ..... Once you finally cross the border to get out of Texas you feel like you almost there. That drive was mind numbing until hitting the border (used to take it a lot when my brother and his wife.... and then later came the kid(s).... lived up there) --- I'm still in Texas! Must. Cross. Border. To feel. Sense of accomplishment.

Thanks for looking that up... yeah, you know I kind of remembered the high school being right behind it, but, sadly my memory, well - sometimes I don't trust it.

It was really awesome. Just awesome.



EDIT: Notice how it says it's home to two teams there.... El Paso High being listed first so that's got to be El Paso high. In defense of myself, I kind of remembered it being the home to more than one high school, so that's why I decided that the high school being right behind it, might not be a correct recollection.

I'm doing the Navy game, myself... no doubt. Plans are in the works for myself and my aforementioned brother and his aforementioned family to be in Annapolis.

Driving to El Paso=Beat down

got my Hilton reservation. Hopefully a meaningful game. It is a 75 MPH interstate once you pass Odessa but it is a boring drive until you get into the desert mountains. I believe flying will be the answer.

A "road trip" doesn't always mean an actual drive in an a car to a destination.

The team goes on a "road trip" in a plane.

And so do SMU fans.

I doubt many SMU fans traveling to UTEP will be driving,
it'll be Southwest Airlines!
