Interesting trip down Nostalgia Lane.

Is that really an article? Or more of a blog reminiscing about "the good ol' days"?

One small mistake. SMU tied Arkansas at home not on the Road. 17-17 to clinch the SWC Championship and first Cotton Bowl in about 15 years. SMU missed a long FG on the last play to win it. But that 21 point loss by Penn St to Alabama was basically written off by those just itching to give JoePa a National Title.

I always wondered if SMU had scored more than 7 points against Pitt would that have gotten us the title or at least more consideration?

Re-Check the SMU - Arkansas game tied 17/17 as I recall this was played
at Arkansas.

No. It was played at Texas Stadium on Nov. 20, 1982. It was also televised.

I do not think so. That NC was given to Paterno after having not gotten it a couple of times himself with undefeated seasons. I think we would have had a better chance if they had known he was going to continue coaching for 100 more years. Those that want to talk aboput being a scapegoat for the DP would have a much better arguement that we were the scapegoat for Paterno's NC.

All things equal, I believe if Meyer were still coach instead of Collins in 1982, we win the NC. Not that Meyer was a better coach, but Meyer was a superior salesman that understood the media then. Just as Bear Bryant had cultivate the media, so to did Meyer. I believe Meyer would have done a better job selling SMU as the NC had he been the coach. And back then, PR was key to winning the NC.

Or he might have swept the snow from the field so that we could score more.

It did sleet in the 4th Q of the Cotton Bowl. Miserably cold and wet I wished we had had a "fast track" that day.
