Mustangs Return To White Helmets

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU football team will don new uniforms in 2008, it
was announced today. SMU will return to white helmets and white pants
and will have three jerseys to choose from: red, white and SMU blue.

The helmet will feature a red Mustang logo, trimmed in blue, blue and
red stripes and a red facemask. SMU wore white helmets during the famed
"Pony Express" era and continued using the helmets until the 2003 season
when the Mustangs switched to a navy helmet.

The jerseys, which will come in red, white and SMU blue, will feature a
Mustang logo at the base of the collar, shoulder stripes and "SMU"
stitched above the white numerals. SMU will wear white pants with red
and blue stripes for both home and away games.

SMU will officially "unveil" the uniforms at the annual Football Kickoff
Luncheon on August 20th at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.

"The fans have spoken and we have listened. Since I arrived at SMU, I
have stated that I wanted to return the Mustang football program to
national prominence," said SMU Director of Athletics Steve Orsini. "When
people think of SMU, they think of white helmets with a red Mustang
logo. When you have a rich tradition like we do here at SMU, it only
makes sense to draw from that."

Finally! Excellent..... any news on how soon they will be available from the locker room site?

With them being unveiled on the 20th, might be tough to get one for the first home game. But I am pumped.

The pants are very similar to the 1980 team pants. The belt in 1980 was white while the new pants have a blue belt. One wonders if the belt will be red for the red jersey. Glad to see the old helmets return. Finally a non Old Miss wannabe uniform.

The red jersey is similar to the 1976-77 red jersey. The numbers were on the sleeve (1976-77)instead of the shoulder pad and there was a slightly different strip on the arm. Still, all in all, it is a reasonable throw back to the Mustang Mania/Pony Express days. It is odd that we would all be excited over a uniform that is so similar to a uniform worn over 30 years ago.

If nothing else, we will look good this year.
