CFN's schedule analysis of SMU

Postby George S. Patton » Thu Jul 10, 2008 11:55 am

Not sure if this has been posted. I don't feel like scrolling through endless football pages to look for it if it was.

SMU
Realistic best case record with this schedule: 7-5
Barring total disaster worst case record: 2-10
Realistic record: 4-8

The June Jones offense might need a few games to get tuned up, and it'll get it in early shootouts at Rice and at Texas Tech along with a true warm-up against Texas State. Two off weeks in November should help the Mustangs stay fresh for big games against Southern Miss and UTEP, while the two projected West favorites, Tulsa and Houston, have to travel to Dallas. On the down side, along with facing the Golden Eagles, SMU has to play UCF from the East. Getting TCU and Navy in the midst of the conference schedule will be tough.

Aug. 29 at Rice
Sept. 6 Texas State
Sept. 13 at Texas Tech
Sept. 20 TCU
Sept. 27 at Tulane
Oct. 4 at UCF
Oct. 11 Tulsa
Oct. 18 Houston
Oct. 25 at Navy
Nov. 1 OPEN DATE
Nov. 8 Memphis
Nov. 15 at UTEP
Nov. 22 OPEN DATE
Nov. 29 Southern Miss

Bold - Almost certain win
Italics - Likely loss

Playing TCU after Tech may be a big plus if we don't lose half the team to injuries. Jones will look at a loss as a learning lesson for our boys to understand that if they want to achioeve the top 25 status they'll have to contend with teams like Big 12 powerhouse TT. TCU may get pounded as the TT game may light a real fire in the bellies of the 'tangs.

Last I checked, the season hadn't started....so I don't think we should be conceding games just yet. Let's at least wait until we get to the Lubbock city limits before we give up, okay?

tangs???? Stangs is shorthand for Mustangs.

I know you are new here but I had to point this out since I have never made a mistake that I acknowledge.

I'm worried about getting crushed by Tech and it holding over injuries. How many players have we lost every year to Tech? It's been non-zero I believe. Maybe the new conditioning program will help.

Replace "TCU" with "NTSU" and that's pretty much what we all thought would happen 2 years ago after losing 35-3 or whatever to TT. The most embarrasing loss during my time as an SMU fan happened shortly after.

Let's take it one at a time and hope for the best but not expect to give anyone a pounding this year....we haven't earned that yet.
