Posted: Fri Jul 11, 2008 11:34 pmCongrats on getting wined and dined by your alma mater. But now that the Notre Dame saga is over, there is a pressing need that requires your immediate attention:
HIRE A MEN'S SOCCER COACH, AND MAKE IT A GREAT ONE.
There are rumors going around, and I don't know which are true and which aren't, and frankly, I don't care. Nonetheless:
• You seem to be an AD with a keen understanding of image and public perception. Because of that, DO NOT GET DUPED INTO HIRING A YOUTH/CLUB COACH. I don't care how successful he is  SMU will be laughed at, and your image will be sullied. When Kansas lost Roy Williams a few years ago to North Carolina, KU didn't go out and snag an AAU coach  it went and got Bill Self, a terrific head coach at a major basketball school. We need you to do the same. Unless a top-10 head coach is interested, Tim McClements and Kevin Grimes should be the only candidates on the list.
• Personally, I vote for McClements. Grimes was a great player, and I hear he's a great coach, but McClements knows the team, including the incoming freshmen. This team is on the cusp of a College Cup appearance, if not a national title. Please allow them to make a run by extending the continuity with McClements. This team is not in need of an overhaul, or a new system or a new lineup. Stay the course  hire McClements.
College head coaching experience. Knowledge of the North Texas soccer community. Experience recruiting. Strong relationship with the team, including a sensational senior class. McClements is the man  don't ignore the forest for the trees. You can make this happen, and should.
