SMU/Hawaii in 2009?

According to a report out of Hawaii by Dave Reardon of the
Honolulu Star Bulletin:
"(UH athletic director) Donovan said SMU and the June Jones reunion is out of the picture, at least for 2009. “That’s correct, they notified us letting us know they’re interested in future years, but 2009 is not possible."

Is a JJ/Hawaii reunion really that desirable from our standpoint? It's expensive as hell to travel all the way out there, and they're not gonna fill very many seats at Ford. There are a lot of OOC teams I would want SMU to play before Hawaii.

I beg to differ. I attended the UNLV v UH game (at UNLV) this past season and the Hawaii fans arrived by the busfulls and easily filled their side of the stadium. My family in Hawaii assures us that the folks there still love, respect and miss June Jones. I bet they would turn out for this game.

Screw that. I need a reason to go Hawaii. This is the perfect excuse.

I hope you're right, but when we were in the same conference, there were few green-clad fans in the stands, if any. I have no doubt that they love Coach Jones, but I'd be surprised if they bring many fans to Dallas.
I need an excuse to go to Hawaii, too. I also need someone to pick up the tab.

does anyone have that picture of the 95% empty Ford, with pretty much only the band in the stands, from a few years back? It seems like that was the Hawaii game. Maybe it was Boise. It's been posted on here a few times.

Probably the 11AM Hawaii game from 2001. I was there, and it was brutal in so many ways.

quite frankly when you sign to play a 13th game with Hawaii in Honolulu that doesn't always mean Hawaii will play in Dallas. The NCAA grants a waiver to the visiting team to offset travel expenses to the Island. SMU would likely only play this game with an unusually high guarantee and probably some assurance of a National TV appearance that could showcase the program. Probably wouldn't be a return trip to Dallas-

Scheduling Hawaii is a goofy idea. Why would SMU want to play Hawaii?

because ESPN would love a game like this-with Hawaii you can sometimes get a late season or late nite exclusive National Telecast. SMU needs those kind of showcases for the program with the announcers spending half the game pointing out that SMU means business. "If a tree falls in the forest...."

Let's get our boxer in fighting shape before we start scheduling bouts against contenders.

Probably the 2007 game against UCF...oh wait, that was more like 99% empty.

That was Boise State. I was there. Finally, after much cajoling, got a buddy of mine, who was at SMU Law at the time to go to a game with me. It was a total embarrassment.
