ND AD alludes to reshaping of conferences. I wonder what he knows.

I'm tired of ND getting preferential treatment from the BCS...when was the last time they were really relevant in college football? Early 90s? How many consecutive bowl games have they lost, 10? Join the Big Ten and play like everyone else.

Ebert and Roeper are splitting up so I guess anything is possible.

I guess ND could join the Big 10 and keep their NBC contract. They aren't going to leave that. They are America's college football team.

I know they just extended through 2015, does anyone know the figures on that deal?

The old deal with NBC was about $9 million a year. With the lucrative Big Ten network and deals with ESPN/ABC, and bowl payouts from 7-8 teams each season, how much would ND stand to lose by joining the Big Ten?

I suspect that even on the slim chance they get serious about joining a conference, they will write they contract so they keep their own TV deal.

well if they do that then they can kiss their guaranteed BCS birth goodbye, they will need to go undefeated or just lose 1 to make it instead of a paltry 10 wins

"when was the last time they(ND) were really relevant in college football? Early 90s?"

Not sure how you define "relevant", but in 2005 Notre Dame finished the regular season 9-2 and one of those two losses was a last second loss to #1 ranked USC who played in the National Championship game against Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns.

Strange, the history books have ND losing to Michigan State that year and USC. Nothing about Texas. And ND got beat as usual in the Fiesta Bowl that season. Now ND did play Brigham YOUNG university. That is close to Vince YOUNG, one can assume.

And thats exactly why I stated "ND finished the regular season 9-2"

Nothing about Texas.

Why would the history books say anything about
ND & Texas since they did not play each other and if you read
my post I did not say they played each other. I said one of ND's
losses came against a team(USC) that played in the National Championship against Texas.

And ND got beat as usual in the Fiesta Bowl that season.

Nice try at changing the subject.
The statement was ND has "not been relevant since the 90's".
I would say a 2005 9-2 regular season record with one of the
two losses being a last second loss to the #1 team in the country is being "relevant".

ps: I think ND has spanked the ThugHorns the last two times they played!

I meant when is the last time they've been in the national title hunt late in the season? If they were routinely a top-5 BCS team then I think they could justify keeping their independent status, but now it's getting a little ridiculous.

in 2005 as stated by IPP.

Had ND beaten USC, and they came so close to doing so, then they would have had a legitimate shot at the National Championship Game versus Texas.

I stand corrected- '05 and '06 they were legitimately in the hunt, perhaps '02 as well:

I guess I was a little overzealous in my ND hatred, but I stand by my original point that ND football isn't what it used to be, and needs to join a conference. It's not like they're being forced into the Big East here, they have an opportunity to join what might be the most lucrative conference in the country.

OTOH, I'm sure the Big East would be more willing than the Big Ten to let ND join and keep their NBC contract.

That's why some people should keep their opinions to themselves and not sound ignorant.
