Willis vs. Mitchell

I've noticed some good reports on Mitchell's progress and play during the summer. Does anyone feel that Mitchell will start in the Run and Shoot or are we just waiting for August practice to commence so that Willis can catch up with the offense and officially be named the starter?

Don't forget about Braden Smith and Logan Turner. You have to add them in the mix as well.

I've heard the argument that Willis relies on his athletic ability to get him out of situations, which is great on busted plays when you need some improvisation. But those traits will hurt him in a Run and Shoot when he needs to stay in the pocket. Any thoughts. I think he has game regardless and can learn to stay in the pocket.

He's had nothing but busted plays to work with so we have no idea what he is really capable of.

Agreed. He has it in him to be a very good QB, as proven his freshman year. Unfortunately, he made a lot of costly mistakes last year. Even worse, we did not have the defense to help bail him out at all.

I just hope he doesn't end up like Jake Plummer. Plummer had a lot of talent, but after so many years as the Cardinals QB, it was engrained in him that making something happen was all on his shoulders. So when he went to Denver, he continued to throw way too many INTs because he couldn't get out of that mindset and he gave up on plays way too early.

Can we start another thread Romo or Bartel? It's SMU related. Kinda.

Only if one of the options is "I don't care."

From the workout reports, it seems Willis is "catching up" just fine, not to mention he studied the playbook 1-on-1 with Morrison during the Spring, so he probably has just as good of grasp of the offense as the others, if not better.

If JJ wants to beat Rice and start his "legacy" at SMU off on the positive note, he'll be starting JW.

Considering Logan Turner is the only quarterback to take part in a single practice with our new coaches, it's insane - at best - to put up a poll listing only two quarterbacks ... neither of which is Turner.

I have no idea if Turner will win the job, and I'd go so far as to guess that Coach Jones and Coach Morrison don't know that, either.

Suggesting it's either Willis or Mitchell (especially considering the reports that Braden Smith has looked very good this spring) is just shortsighted and foolish.

Where is the "Whoever JJ thinks is better" option?

I'm with HP on this one...

JJ specifically mentioned Logan Turner and Justin Willis at the C-USA Media Day. We've also heard that it might be a rotation early in the season until a starter emerges. Honestly, I don't care who it is as long as its the quarterback that JJ thinks gives us the best chance to win.

if you want a poll with all the others, post one. I was curious as to Willis vs Mitchell.
