It would have the effect of building rivalries because the east would only play east teams plus one or two crossover games, and the west would only play west teams.

I agree. The current system with poorly attended bowl games and hardly watched bowl games is perfect. It allows the never will bes to have some crumbs while the rich BSC teams enjoy the cream of the cream.

We all know playoffs have been abysmal failures. Look at the poorly attended and watched March Madness nonsense. Why, nobody cares for a fair playoff system. They all want a computer dictated (and programed by the chosen few) system that comes up with split National Champions every other year.

Head up competition may also damage the fragile egos of the young men currently playing. We certainly wouldn't want to interfere with the Alan Aldafication of the college football playing male now would we? The current goal is to feel good about playing and not to win (which may explain JtStang's desire to hope but not expect).
