Absolutely. Everything Notre Dame-related is worth mocking, because it's Notre Dame-related, but they got this one right. After a couple of early bumps, Willis is up for a big year.

Hope he cracks the starting lineup at Rice.

I think a lot of PonyFans do.
I know I do.

I think as long as he's got his head on straight (which I think he does, now), he's a damn good QB. I'm sure JJ is more than capable of making a justifiable decision come gameday...

I'll be a lot happier if he cracks the starting lineup at SMU.

I just want someone/anyone to throw the ball to SMU receivers. Nobody knows if he has his head on straight unless they've actually talked to him (and not read a pre-planned interview). From what I've heard from the football players, Logan Turner may be good enough to win the job mid-season even if Willis is starting.

I fell off the J-Pill band wagon, unfortunately he is just as likely to quit football mid-season after he is benched for not seeing an open receiver, running up field and fumbling the ball...

I talked to him and he does have his head on straight, what JJ did this spring was give him a wake-up call of who was in charge, and JW got the message.

I hope you are right. However. I talked to him a year ago and thought the same thing! He really is a charming guy. I just hope he has found some matturity. But, giving up when there was about to be a new coach named didn't reflect it.

I think JW has matured, and now realizes what an opportunity he has in front of him and what all he'll be given up if he does get stupid again.

I don't think SMU did JW any favors by making him the face of the team last year with all the advertising and comparisons to SMU greats, though it was a cool campaign, but I could see where it could have given JW a big head, but then the beating he took during the season, along with the losing, and then JJ suspending him this spring, has humbled JW quite a bit where I believe he's now got on his head on straight. Time will tell, but I have a good feeling about JW and SMU overall, and believe this will be the year they get to a bowl.

None of this touchy-feely stuff means anything if Jones doesn't like the way he plays the position. I have heard nothing from Jones indicating he likes Willis as his QB, but I have heard him talk about how excited he is about some of the younger QBs.

I agree with both of you...

JJ has quite an ego, and will want to make an immediate impact by beating Rice on national TV, and the only way there's a shot of the happening is if JW is behind center.

If JW isn't the starter, I really don't think a freshmen QB, playing his first college game against an equal opponent, on national tv no less, will have much of a chance. Current odds are Rice -4.5, if JW is named starting QB, they will go down to Rice -1, or maybe even a pick-em.

Talk is cheap, and jtstang has a point. Of course Willis is gonna say he's matured if you ask him....I would in his shoes too! There's no rule which says a freshman can't lead a football team. If that were the case, Michael Vick wouldn't have lead VTech to the championship game as a redshirt freshman. Granted, few true freshman start at quarterbacks, but it has happened, and some have been successful. There's no reason why someone like Logan Turner couldn't run the offense as well as Willis.

And I really think the pressure of playing on national tv thing is overrated when you're playing Rice...
