Concerns about Linebackers

This position concerns me more than any other position on Defense. Even though our secondary got smoked game after game last year I think we really have increased our athletic ability althought everyone is unproven (besides McCann). I know we plan on being aggresive on D and forcing the offense to make changes but the speed of Our linebackers is a real concern...I think Smart has decent speed in the middle. Bonilla is not very fast (I dont think he will be starting by week 3). can anyone comment on the speed of Odiari and Fleps? I know Herron has outstanding speed and atheltic ability...I think he could be a real surprise. Any input is apprreciated...

I saw Odiari this morning. He is a character. He walked down the lineof QBS bumping fists and patting backs, while the QBS seemed to be in the middle of a little pre-practice talk with coach. He was in a very jovial mood. Let's see if he is all that he seems to think he is. I certainly hope so.

Odiari is playing probably 20 lbs. heavier than he was coming out of high school, when he was listed as a 4.6 guy. So he's decently fast, although not blazing fast.
Someone who's sort of been flying under the radar, but appears to have bubbled to the top is sophomore LB Jason Jackson, of whom you'll be hearing more about shortly.
Fleps is a 4.5 guy, which is good RB/LB speed. He's really come on this year and has been a hoss in the weight room.
Although I haven't heard much about him, another young guy who got a lot of experience last year is Ryan Moczygemba. Pride, what's the scoop on him this fall?

According to ponystampede.com yesterday, the LB postition coach said if the season started today the depth would shake out as follows:
MIKE: Smart, Odiari, Moxy
WILL: Jackson, Herron, Jones
SAM: Bonilla, Fleps, Kennemer
He wants a lot of depth so these kids can play fast and do not get overworked. I believe as if there will be a good group of kids that are constantly rotating after hearing what he had to say. Obviously, he is closer to the source and has the best knowledge.

Once again, it is my time to ask a basic football question. what is MIKE WILL and SAM?

The Middle, Weakside, and Strongside linebackers respectively.
Or the kids from My three sons. I'm not sure which.

Wow! Thanks, but even after 9 years in this country I'm still lost. I understand Middle, but which is the weak and strong side?
And I don't know "My Three Sons"

The strongside is typically the side with the TE (depending on the offense) and the weakside will only have a Tackle.

Strongside would line up on whichever side contained a tight end. Weakside on the side without one. I have no idea where they would line up in no-TE formations.

Thanks. Next question: What is the difference in the style of play of the three types?

Most of the teams we played last year moved the ball at Will.
