Hawaii's new starting QB was stolen from SMU?

Postby Garret » Thu Aug 14, 2008 7:09 pm

It might be off-topic to note that Hawaii picked its starting QB today, but the news about how they recruited him is SMU-related. When Dan Morrison was the QB coach at Hawaii, he mentioned to former Hawaii QB Nick Rolovich (now Hawaii QB coach) that JJ/DM liked Brent Rausch (JC transfer that had 3 years to play)...and then after the coaching changes Hawaii offered first and got Rausch.

Rausch wasn't very well known in recruiting because most people assumed he had to play one more year at his JC before he could transfer to a D-IA school, but Morrison/JJ knew that he could play in D-IA in 2008.

He’s a pretty remarkable story. Best, of course, is that UH stole him from SMU, sort of.

Dan Morrison mentioned to Rolo, who was at CCSF at the time, that UH really liked Rausch. Rolo remembered that when he replaced Morrison, who went to SMU. UH offered Rausch, who accepted. SMU made a late pitch but it was too late.
