I really like Mason's background. While he wasn't DC, he's spent the last 7 seasons in a program that is non-BCS that prepared to face and did face BCS teams and consistently competed with that competition.

Since the DMN article mentioned SMU will use a 4-3 or 3-4 defense how about this for a 3-4 Defensive Alignment-maybe not in week one but eventually:

DE Taylor Thompson 6-5, 260 4.46
NG Serge Ellize 6-1, 300 (OK I know he's not really that tall)
DE Adrian Dizer 6-6, 260
MLB Alex Odiari 6-0, 250
MLB Justin Smart 6-3, 240
OLB Julian Herron 6-0, 215 4.4
OLB: pick one

I really think the 3-4 fits our defensive personnel much better especially certain players. Ellizee is a proto-type NG not DT. Dizer and Thompson are tall and athletic which fits the 3-4 better. Herron is our best athlete at LB. And probably our two best LBs really fit at MLB rather than sitting one on the bench or moving him to a position they aren't really suited for. I hope we use this 3-4 defense A LOT-it would answer a lot of questions with this defense. Probably as good athletically as SMU has been for awhile. Who are the projected starters in the 3-4 right now?

Finally, we agree on defense...fits our depth at the positions, IMHO. Thinner on the line...a 3-4 can disguise a 3-3-5 without giving up too much on the run. I like it.

ive always been a fan of the 3-3-5 D and kind of wanted to see PB use it, but weve never had the athleticism to run a 3-3-5

Taylor is 6'6 1/2.That guy walked by me yesterday, and that kid looks like he is in his mid 20's. It's hard to believe, he is only 18.
