Bad Decision?..Ego?...Arrogance?

Looking pretty obvious that June is going to go with Mitchell as the starter.
I see many rationalizing this by taking the route that "I trust June to make the right decision". or "June knows QBs and picked the one he felt was the best".
Did he?
I hope so, but I get a sense that some other things played a bigger role here. Mostly Jones wanting to start the guy that followed him to SMU. This played a bigger role than talent or the rationale that a redshirt would immensely help this kid.
He wanted this guy to start and threw the others under the bus because he feels experience and talent plays a backseat to his "genius".
I hope this works out, who knows, it may. But I see a chink in June's armor here. This decision was based more on ego and arrogance than smart football. My opinion anyway.

for those that want to quickly point the finger at JJ for making a bad decision, remember that Justin Willis put himself in this position by not doing the right thing, going to class, attending meetings, etc.
JW has learned a very valuable lesson and no one can blame him for not starting except for himself.
i will say this one last time before the board gets really crazy.
JJ KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING...

You make good points. I hope JJ isn't buying into his own hype - he needs to make this decision based on who is the best player/fit, not on how he wants to be the guy known for making it.
I know the guy is a great coach, but this is a very questionable move.

disagree with you as the signs were out there JW wasn't his guy in Spring. As for rationalizing his decision, i dont think we have to do that for him. And the "I trust him" line isn't a cop out, because some of us do. It really is kind of amusing to watch people throw in the towell before a single snap has been taken at rice.

I agree with bagice, if JJ goes with 2 freshmen, I hope his "ego" is worth the 2 million because this year will be a write-off.
As in TopGun "Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash."

Not throwing in the towel. I will support his decision, but I cannot get over the fact that out of all the QBs we have, his top pick seems to be the guy that followed him here to SMU, even though he is a true freshman and has yet to take a snap in a college game.

I don't understand why everyone is so sure that Mitchell can't play as well as Willis. You have to remember that the system that Willis starred in is much different than JJ's system. JJ's system is all about timing with a ton of drags, outs, posts etc etc. The QB has to be able to make a decision quickly, and whip the ball out fast and accurate. It is all about timing and accuracy. Now, since JJ has been running this system forever, I am sure he can judge who will be able to do the things necessary to succeed more than us! I have no idea how posters on this wall can already second guess this decision. JJ has been successful running this system with no name QB's before. I'm sure he will do the same here. Also, people that are acting like another season without a bowl would be a "chalk off and rebuilding" need to get their expectations in check. Just my two cents.

Heh, I have yet to throw in the towel! But I think I ask a legitimate question. Even if JJ loves this guy as a QB, why not redshirt him, let him learn, mature.

it has to be because he doesnt think JW has what it takes to lead this team. some freshman has to be the back up/starter (if JW isnt starter). so you might as well get these guys the experience now. I dont blame him.
The QB situation over at the U is pretty ugly with no one with experience over there. thats why they will be platooning 2 freshman this year.

Just because he has had 0 snaps at the collegiate level doesn't mean he is not the better option for this offense.

This is the crux of my argument, if your statement is true, then Fantastic! I am 100 percent on board.
My fear and reason for this post, however, is that what if the main factor in the decision here was based on something else....

Thanks. Your post just saved me a lot of typing. Agree completely. To think his choice is an ego thing is laughable. Good luck to Bo and Braden and the rest of the Mustangs.

Who are you to say this? How many practices were you at and what are your qualifications to judge QB in the june jones offense? Have you talked to Jones and know what he is thinking?
I am very, very nervous about this QB decision but some of you guys are talking a lot about stuff you don't know anything about.
