True Freshman as Starting Quarterback

Postby Dooby » Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:55 am

I am racking my brain thinking of good ones as true Freshamn. Kevin Kolb comes to mind; he did well as a Freshman. (now is where Stallion comes on and says you can't compare the two).

Brady Quinn started some as a true freshman to mediocre results if I recall. Jimmy Clausen didn't light the world on fire.

Here are some names from a list I found online:

Jamelle Holieway, Oklahoma; in 1985, he became the only true freshman quarterback to start on a national championship team

Peyton Manning, Tennessee; named SEC Freshman of the Year in 1994 after compiling a 7-1 record as a starter

Philip Rivers, N.C. State; had an 8-4 record as a starter in 2000

Gino Guidugli, Cincinnati; passed for 2,573 yards in 2001; won two games with go-ahead TD passes in the final 10 seconds of play

Kevin Kolb, Houston; passed for 3,131 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2003

Chad Henne, Michigan; tied Michigan single-season record for TD passes (25) in 2004 and led the Wolverines to the Rose Bowl

Mitch Mustain, Arkansas; had an 8-0 record as a starter in 2006 and transferred in January to Southern California

Matthew Stafford, Georgia; had 6-2 record as a starter in 2006

kolb was not a five star, but you knew that.

well, JJ can do what he wants. He's the boss. Just don't lose to Rice. He put alot of pressure on a freshman today, with Willis and a fan base hungry for immediate success looking over his shoulder. Lose at Rice and its ugly early, simple as that.

Tebow isn't the best example because they lined him up all over the field.

But he is a another great example of a 5 Star(no. 1 rated QB in the Country) starting as a Freshman.

Dooby,

I guess it'd be a little obvious to point out that you left a kid named Justin Willis off that list...

2,000+ yards, 26 TDs, only 6 INTs.
