I believe there was a quote from Coach Morrison that alluded to the fact that the staff had gone through a season before with a freshman QB starting. I think Chang was a freshman in 2000. Wasn't this the year that Hawai'i went 3-9? The year before, 1999, was June Jone's first season which resulted in the big turn around following the 0-12 season.
Can a Warrior fan confirm this analysis?

After last year, 3-9 would be a marked improvement.

Cynical comment of the day: Well, unfortunately, Bo Levi doesn't have SMU on the schedule.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Not when you consider the other 20 years of losing. This season will be nothing more than a long practice session to prepare BO LEVI MITCHELL for next season.
If we're just going to throw another season because JJ wants be a hard a@#, I'll just watch over the internet. I was going to purchase season tickets but there has been a change of plans.
UH won 3 games the year Chang started as a true freshman. I refuse to go to that stadium and watch another year of losing regardless of who's wearing the headset.

More stats for Chang as a Freshman: 3-7 as a starter; 245 completions on 469 attempts 52.2% completion percentage); 3041 yards; 19 TD's; 19 Int's; QB Rating of 111.8.
Hawaii that season still had the #4 passing offense and #40 total offense in the country (they had no running game that year). They averaged 24.5 points per game that season, which was 65th. They had the 86th ranked defense that season.
Interestingly, Change absolutely melted down his freshamn year against Rice and threw 5 interceptions.

There are zillions of threads today due to the QB announcement, but I guess I'll give my insight into Tim Chang in this one.
Tim Chang did NOT start the 2000 season as the starting QB when he was a true freshman. Instead, Junior Nick Rolovich (who is now Hawaii's QB coach) was the starting QB for the first two games. To give you an idea of how that went (Rolo publicly admits that he wasn't prepared well enough during the 2000 season), Hawaii lost at home to Portland State and at UTEP. Rolovich admits that he didn't understand the offense well enough in his junior season, but the light "clicked" for him in his senior season.
After the first 2 losses, JJ made Chang the starter and the team did better, especially the last 5 games. Little trivia: Hawaii's (and Chang's) first win in the 2000 season was over SMU.
Rolovich had a 46.3% completion rate, Chang had a 52.2% completion rate. Rolovich passed for 203.8 yards per game while Chang passed for 304.1 yards per game (including the 130 yards he threw at UTEP when he came off the bench for Rolovich). So, while Chang didn't do that great as a true freshman, he was 3-7 while the Junior QB was 0-2 and Chang had a much better completion % and yards per game stat.
I seriously doubt that any coach wants to start a true freshman...but you have to look at the options on the team to see why that freshman isn't redshirting instead.
One last note: Chang was injured in his second year and Rolovich got the starting job back (after starting 2001 as the 3rd-team QB). I wonder if JJ and/or Dan Morrison will tell a certain junior QB at SMU that tidbit. It was truly an amazing sight to see how much better Rolo was once he understood the offense. 8-1 as a starter, 3,361 yards passing, 34 TDs, 9 INTs, 4th in the nation in total offense and 10th in passing efficiency. Against then-undefeated BYU, he threw for 543 yards and 8 TDs!
