PonyFans.com feature: FAST LEARNER

Freshman receiver B.J. Lee is in a familiar position: once again the shortest player on his team, Lee once again recorded the fastest 40-yard dash on his team. Lee visited recently with PonyFans.com to discuss his adjustment from playing running back in a high school offense that employed very little passing to playing receiver in an offense that will put the ball in the air a majority of the time.

hmm well a 5-5 Outside Receiver is really quite different in Division 1A. Why isn't he playing inside where most midgets are played?

name me a 5-5 OUTSIDE receiver? Didn't say he couldn't be successful-just that generally taller receivers play outside and smalller players play inside. The average height of a D1A OUTSIDE receiver is probably in the 6-2 or 6-3 range.

Nobody accused you of saying he couldn't play there. I interpreted the comment as bristling at your less-than-PC moniker for vertically-challenged WRs.
Or am I misreading you, EPPony Fan?

actually I was just surprised they are using him at OUTSIDE receiver. This doesn't even raise an eyebrow to any other poster on the Board?

It does, but there have been times they've had Bryant (5-6) and Robinson (5-10 ... not that much of a stretch) outside and Sanders (5-11) inside. I agree, it's a little unusual, but from having talked to the coaches, I get the impression they base the inside/outside decisions more on route-running and running style than height.
Then again, they're nothing if not unorthodox, right?

Having a 5'5" outside WR is very irregular, I have never seen it at D1A level. Most of these small guys are quick and shifty and dont have elite straight line speed. BJ has the quick lateral movement, leaping ability and top end straight ahead speed. Because of his attributes, he also fits the mold of a right outside reciever or X in the RnS. The skill set could allow JJ to utilitize screens, the switch, and several choice option routes to exploit mismatches in the secondary.

An alternative explanation, and more likely, is that they stuck him at X to learn basic fundamentals of recieving in the RnS. The route running at X is premium, and the most stressed in JJs 4-wide O.
