Before the QB decision everyone was saying if we could just improve our D we'd be in good shape. People's next biggest concern after the D seemed to be the QB situation. I feel like a broken record repeating this over and over again but....

To me my biggest concerns on this team are the O-Line and WR's! We have ONE RELIABLE PASS CATCHER in a run and shoot offense. We have a mostly inexperienced, not so talented O-Line that JJ has repeatedly pointed out as being far behind what he inherrited at Hawaii. He has reinforced the impression that even our young guys lack talent based on the fact that he has gotten 7 of 15 commits on the O-Line this year.

I am extremely concerned about a R&S offense that has poor pass protection and no one to catch the ball.

There was marked improvement in catching ability from spring practice to now. I was really worried about their hands in the spring but it looks like good coaching and thousands of reps have improved their hands A LOT.

Obviously the O line has always been something we could improve upon. I think JJ has shown that is on the top of his list by focusing his recruiting efforts there.

The O-Line wasn't any better during our first try at the run-n-shoot post DP and yet Romo & Freiburger used to put up big passing numbers. Surely the talent level at O-Line and WR is improved from the 1989-1992 days............

Only if Jason Wolf has one more year of eligibility left.

QBs will complete tons of passes in the Run and Shoot and Receivers will receive tons of catches in the Run and Shoot. Big Deal. You need athletes to win-as we saw under Rossley. Of course, Sanders is outstanding. For the sake of argument I'll give you Robinson although he has proven next to nothing. The rest of the receiving corp is about as marginal and as questionable as you will EVER find at the D1A level. Expect teams to attempt to shut down Sanders-then the real test begins. Do we have receivers who can make BIG PLAYS.

The good (?) news is...it won't take long to find out.

To be truthful I do not believe there is any good news. With two tries with the run and shoot in the pros JJ had one winning season with it. The pro's figured it out and it became known as the throw and hope. If a team has a good D line that can put up a consistent pass rush it is beat (Sugar bowl)
To win on regular basics you need to be able to run between the tackles
And complete the quick slant across the middle. This keeps the defence from packing or sagging on you. But in saying this in CUSA by 2010 SMU should beat all the other in the division with the exception of UH If SMU can put a fair defence . Do not expect to beat the Big 12 teams on the schedule or teams from one of the power conferences because they will out defence us.

I'm sorry but this is a stupid post that lacks perspective.

1. There is plenty of good news, starting with the fact that we have one of the best college football coaches in the country.
2. What June Jones did in the pros and whether the pros can figure out the R&S is irrelivant. Pete Carrol, Steve Spurrier, Bobby Petrino, Nick Saban all FLOPPED in the pros but are FANTASTIC college coaches.
3. Are you saying you would be upset with SMU getting destoyed in a BCS bowl? 99% of us would be tickled pink to be there.
4. The top team in CUSA (if that were SMU) certainly has the chance to beat BCS programs.

Agreed. In fact Aldrick is more of a speed burner/athlete with potential to be a quality D1a receiver. I stand by my assertation that as of now we have one reliable D1a receiver heading into this season. That scares me for a R&S team, which oh by the way, will have awful pass protection.

When JJ inherited Hawaii did he have any stand-out WRs? I know he had some talent last year, so if not at least he's shown he can progress them.

Ashley Lelie was a first round pick by the Broncos, I think he's a 49er now. He was a junior in Jones first season at Hawaii. He broke most of the WAC recieving records, no small accomplishment considering BYU used to be in the WAC.
