Houston Chronicle: Rice Game Plan for More Fans

The Rice-SMU showdown will be more of an entertainment extravaganza than a routine gridiron clash, and through an aggressive advertising campaign in print and on the radio and television airwaves, Rice AD Chris Del Conte hopes to lure a sizable crowd to Rice Stadium that might enjoy the product enough to return when the Owls host North Texas on Sept. 27.
Some 75 members of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo barbecue committee will help organize a cook-off honoring the rodeo’s scholarship recipients at Rice, who will be in attendance.
The first 2,000 fans will eat for free, with the proceeds of the remaining $6 plates going to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Houston keyboardist Ezra Charles will perform at Tailgate Owley, a self-contained area on the practice fields north of the stadium housing rock climbing walls, balloon animals, face painting and concessions. Mayor Bill White will serve as an honorary coach and conduct the ceremonial coin toss, while furniture impresario Jim McIngvale will be recognized for his advertising contributions via Gallery Furniture.
“The advertisement will help raise awareness on what a great value this is,â€
