No, it's not about The Pony Express.
But it still looks like a good movie to see.
It's about Ernie Davis of Syracuse University.
The 1960 Cotton Bowl will be featured. Syracuse v University of Texas. 'Horns lost!

Thanks for the link. I look forward to seeing it.
SMU should be proud of our role with the first black scholarship FB player in the SWC, Jerry Levias, and the coach who recruited him, Hayden Fry. Exciting player and difference maker.
Alot has transpired in 40+ years.

The trailer we saw in the theater made it look like yet another movie that makes the state of Texas look like a bunch of backward buffoons. I think there is a line to the effect of "no where is more racist than Texas." Really? Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi? We'll still probably see it. Maybe just on DVD.

One of the few acceptable bigotries left is against the southern white man. Claiming that Texas is or ever was the most racist state in the union is silly. Most of Texas was on the leading edge of integration and currently has one of the most diverse populations in the central US.

I always like to guess what the 'pitch line' for movies were. The 'pitch line' for "The Express" could have been '"Brian's Song meets "Glory Road"'.

Not a bad pitch. It really seems like those movies blend together in this one.

I am not so sure that it is accurate to say that Texas was on the leading edge of integration. Like most southern states, we didnt integrate our schools until long after Brown v. Board. UT was the last all white football team to win a national championship. There wasnt a lot of Klan activity here like in Mississippi, but notice that now that the DISD is integrated there is nary a white kid to be found in a classroom. I am proud that SMU led the way in integrating the SWC, but unfortunately we played football sometihing like 50 years before we got around to it.

I think I read somewhere that Talladega Nights was greenlighted (greenlit?) after studio execs heard the 6 word pitch: "Will Farrell as a NASCAR driver"

Talladega Nights was a hit but I sure wish studio movie execs would turn down "Will Farrell as a ABA player" or "Will Farrell gets a step brother"

I call [deleted]!
My kids attend Hillcrest High School in DISD and they're as white as the day is long. Yes, they attend a 'diversely populated' high school. And guess what? They have NO PROBLEM WITH IT!
Dallas Schools

I guess MrMustang1965's expletive was meant for me. I recently looked at the statistics. In 1971 there were over 85,000 white students in the DISD. As of 2006, there were fewer than 10,000. I applaud the white families that have kept their kids in DISD schools. I am personally committed to public schools. But the cold hard facts are that there has been incredible white flight from the Dallas schools. I wish that all schools were as diverse as Hillcrest must be. Unfortunately, when white students make up less than 8% of the students, it is hard to say that the district is truly diversified. It certainly doesnt reflect the racial makeup of the total population.

"White flight" has more to do with "affluence flight" than race, it just correlates. Look at the idiots running DISD and the crime in a lot of the schools. Most people, if they can afford to move their kids elsewhere, choose to do so unless they live near the best DISD schools. I wouldn't want to send my kids to a school where homework only counts if it helps your grade, you can't take off late points on anything, and kids are allowed to make up any test any time for full credit. That's just a disservice to the kid.

Once again the BEVO Corporation aka
The Dallas Morning News has not properly presented the FACTS!
THE FACTS!
Students can’t be given grades below 50.
A 50 is the lowest grade on the report card. This does not apply
to daily classwork grades/homework grades/tests, etc.
Students can retake any test they fail anytime.
Students at every level must be given one opportunity to retake
any MAJOR test (as defined by grade level/dept. teachers)
within 5 school days the failing grade was received or no later
than 10 days of the date of the test.
Teachers cannot give grades on homework unless they help kids pass.
True, but only at grades 2-5. At grades 6-12, homework grades
can be recorded at teacher discretion as previously practiced.
Students cannot receive a zero or grade penalty for work not done or
not completed on time.
As part of their grade level/department grading procedures,
teacher teams at each campus determine the grade penalties
and/or grade reduction procedures. As campus instructional
leaders, principals have the authority to approve the teacher-
developed procedures.
Parents must be called before recording a zero in the grade book.
True, but only at grades 2-5. Teachers at grades 6-12 are
encouraged to contact parents if a zero would result in a failing
six weeks grade for a student, but are not required to do so.
This policy will lower academic standards for students.
[b]This policy holds students accountable while providing them with
limited opportunities to recover from short term failure as
academic standards are raised and students are held
accountable for “college readyâ€
