how did the Rice kids from your high school differ from you and other SMU enrollees? SMU has made significant strides in academics and fundraising over the last decade, so I'm most curious about recent experiences.

From my high school (Lufkin) in 1986, we didn't have any SMU enrollees that I was aware of but had a couple that went to Rice. One -- a year ahead of me -- was a white middle class geeky guy (NM Scholar). The other was Indian and also in the top 10.

One of my best friends from jr high moved to Plano Sr High, later enrolled at Rice and became their homecoming queen. His parents were surely proud. A weird place indeed but beer bike and the college system are cool.

The only future Rice enrollee I recall from 20 years ago was quiet, waifish, to herself, and an eventual Ph.D. Her older brother went to UCSD and wound up with an MD/PhD. I couldn't picture either one of them on the Hilltop.

Graduated from high school in 2001. There was a girl a year ahead of me that went to Rice. Nice, but shy and quiet. And yeah smart, very smart. There might have been some from my actual class but cannot remember.

People I know who went to Rice were asian.

The thing about going to Rice is since it is so small, you pretty much have to be involved in tons and tons of extra-curricular BS stuff to get in. Smart isn't really worth that much. Considering I didn't waste my time with any of that junk that I didn't want to do, and actually got kicked out of national honor society, I didn't bother applying to Rice. That and I didn't want to take SAT-IIs.

SMU will take anyone who will pay full tuition. Getting scholarship at SMU is the equivalent to getting accepted elsewhere.
