friend's conversation with Rice AD

Postby peruna81 » Wed Aug 27, 2008 8:36 pm

Friend at church met with the Rice AD today and the subject of the SMU-Rice game arose. AD stated that "SMU is starting a kid from Katy that we wouldn't even recruit or offer" and that Rice expects to hang big numbers on him on Friday. Inferred that the media/ESPN hype on JJ will be overshadowed by a huge butt-kicking by the Owls. This friend of mine, an even-keel type, said he was amused to hear Rice folks talking trash, but more so that this individual would show such open, obvious disdain for a recruit of another program.

Arrogance befits a fool....

I long for the days that Rice ( in Houston or otherwise ) was considered an easy mark...those days are long passed, but I am hoping that my buddy has a great conversation with the Rice AD on Monday about the kid Rice 'should have' offered.

Interesting info. But why would those days be long past? Those days are coming.

why would Rice offer a kid they knew they couldn't get?
Bo Levi Mitchell was going where June Jones was.
the rice AD can talk trash about Bo Levi Mitchell all he wants
but he knows BLM would have told Rice NO THANKS!

Between 1920 and 1979, we had a winning percentage of 52%. Rice won 48% of their games. Our overall win percentage head to head during that time period is 58.5%. Hardly domination. Or are you talking about the relatively brief period of time when we cheated?

days of the 60's-mid 80's...during my stint there ( 77-81 ) we had one singularly miserable experience at the Cotton Bowl, and an increasing joy when we saw the Owls were the next opponent.

I remember one year Rice's coach made some remark to the media that Ron Meyer had run up the score on them the year before...we played them at Texas Stadium and will never forget a LARGE sign hanging near the Rice bench that said "Run it up again, Ron'. Fell behind 0-14, and then proceeded to dismantle them thoroughly.

I do believe those days are possible again...but there will be days of misery yet.

Even though you've included cheating years, you're right. I can see how a guy who set his expectations in those two decades would feel that Rice ought to be an easy win.

The freshman QB that Rice signed was rated lower than Bo.

I haven't been around anywhere near as long as most of you guys, but this is day 1 stuff...you don't lose to Rice - EVER. It's just not acceptable unless you're playing chess or some other nerd activity.

I think I would have told the Rice AD,

"You guys suck and so does your stupid band!"
