Yes, I am disappointed that the defense was terrible. It's not just that we were overmatched; there were some awful defensive coaching decisions at play in my opinion, particularly with regard to rushing schemes.

OTOH, our defense failed to make plays time after time even with the right calls. Was it 3 easy dropped interceptions in the first half, 2 for sure touchdowns? Those were the right calls but we just couldn't buy a play on defense. I'm not defending them, as they were terrible, but make a couple of them and the game is closer and our confidence builds.

We are in good hands. Please don't abandon reason or this team based on one bad game. Relax and try to be patient- our guy deserves it.

I ought to be used to losing, but it sure is discouraging to go down 56-27 to Rice in Houston. But I am no where close to giving up on JJ. We already have signs of a good scoring offense. It's the defense that is the problem. We are going to take some hard hits before things get better. If JJ can't do it, SMU is doomed.

JJ is not known for fixing defenses, but there is no excuse for how we played tonight. Yes the 3 injured DLs on 3 straight plays hurt us and had an effect on the game. But it's not like we were getting pressure before that. The lack of any creative blitz schemes left me scratching my head. We switched to 3 DL for most of the second half and mixed up some minimal blitzes (I hesitate to call them that because normally it was just a 4th rusher) but that was it.

We have a brand new scheme, new coaches, and a true freshman QB. It is going to take some time. We have waited 20 years so let's give this guy some time.
