Today's Houston Chronicle: different perspective

DMN, ponystampede, pf.com are all sunshine venues compared to how the Chronicle wrote the game up. Some valid points that should concern us, too.

*Yes, that was our same crappy defense from a year ago, so we shouldn't have expected much different. However, that was also Rice's same crappy defense from a year ago, and they stifled us.

*We barely had a little over 200 yards offense well into the second half against aforementioned previously crappy defense

*Yes, turnovers hurt us. On the other hand, take away two special teams miscues on Rice's part, and they would've dominated on the order of 56 or 63-13 or so.

And it was last year's RIce Senior lead offense against our new defensive scheme. It was last year's crummy Rice defense against a brand spanking new Freshman lead SMU offense.

We all knew Jones had a challenge ahead of him. After last night, we have a greater appreciation of how daunting that challenge will be. The year isn't over. We have room to improve and a young team that can make vast improvements over a short period of time. We are not facing major injuries which are all pluses.

ESPN flashed a bullet point last night that I was not aware of. SMU has the youngest 2 deep roster in Division 1. WOW! I was hoping for a little better showing last night but I do believe the last six games of the season will be better than the first six. We made a lot of stupid young mistakes last night. Growing pains.
