SMU's freshman quarterback wilts against Red Raiders

Their Headline says it all:

"I won't be done learning this offense until the end of the year," Mitchell said. "I'm glad I've picked up what I've picked up so far. The thing is, you can only learn so much in practice. It's all about game-time decisions and getting out there and playing the games and going against a defense with another color."

Jones could not let Mitchell take the heat himself and said it also fell on him not preparing his freshman quarterback well enough for this type of road game. Mitchell led Katy to the Texas 5A Division II state championship a year ago and Jones said Saturday night's showing was nothing short of a young kid trying to do too much.

"I talked a little bit with him on the sideline already," Jones said. "In high school, he hadn't been a real passing quarterback. You scramble around - you run the ball. You can't throw it back into the middle of the field.

"You see the same things with rookies in the NFL. He's an 18-year-old kid trying to make something happen and he's just got to learn to play within himself."

It will be interesting to see what Bo Levi does, when he goes back to Lubbock as an experienced junior.

And Darrius Johnson will be a sophomore if he plays as a freshman.

Deonte McDade will also be a sophmore if he plays as a freshman.

I'm going to ahead and predict that Mitchell will be watching the game from the sideline and ponyfans will be talking about the next "phenom" by then. Pretty good bet with SMU Football.

True, but if Jones is to be able to recruit any blue chip players with this offense, it ought to be receivers.

Considering Coach Jones and Coach Morrison, and their ability to work with and develop young QBs, I get the sense Mitchell will be just fine. The kid doesn't lack confidence, nor should he.

Its true-I pointed it out after watching a replay of the 5A Championship Game this summer. Katy ran the I-Formation and the RB Audre Dean was among the Top RBs in the Country and I believe ran for more than 2,000 yards. The transition for Mitchell was bigger than any QB on our team and definitely bigger than willis faced going from spread to Run and Shoot.
