Orsini's FB coaching hire's first year

Postby George S. Patton » Wed Sep 17, 2008 9:20 am

At 1-2, we don't know how June Jones' inaugural season will go. Many believe 3-4 wins max.

When Steve Orsini was at UCF and hired his first coach in 2004, he brought in George O'Leary.

The Golden Knights went 0-11 in O'Leary's first year and rebounded with an 8-5 season in 2005, appeared in the inaugural CUSA championship game and played in a bowl.

Will it happen here?

Just food for thought.

I think I'll beat Stallion to the punch. O'Leary also recruited a bunch of kids that could not get into SMU even in our more generous current environment. Talent does make a difference.

I was about to write something about the academic stuff but I didn't want to make the post too long. But given we have changed our stuff or are in the process of changing them, that could change.

Anyway, just throwing this out there for the sake of discussion.

I haven't mentioned the Model in half a year-not a reasonable excuse anymore based upon what I am seeing with Football and Basketball recruits. It will take 3-4 years of recruiting to demonstrate the full effect of those changes.

I should have said 3-4 years of improved recruiting. But

I wasn't kiddin' for the last decade when I said about a thousand times that the most important step was leveling the playing field. Not even factoring in the Coach which is Step 2. Now its up to recruiting a better talent base like we are beginning to see in Basketball. 80-90% of what you are as a football team is based upon what you did in February and recruiting 4, 3 and 2 years ago.

Just food for thought.[/quote]

I lived through that 0 an 11 year at UCF. I also lived through the 3 and 9 year prior to it when my son played on the team.

Don’t forget that combined together in 2003 and 2004 they lost 17 games in a row, the longest loosing streak in college ball at the time, before a win against Marshal in the Citrus bowl. The goal posts came down. An exhilarating win from the depths of failure.

SMU emulates my past experience with UCF and I believe we will have similar results in the same time frame.

It is painful when your team is up against odds that you know are insurmountable, but you still try to be positive for all the right reasons. The difference now is, When UCF takes the field against Boston College Saturday morning, I know they have a chance to win. Unlike what happened to SMU last week. One day I will have that same confidence or hope, with my newly adopted team.

Yeah, but the changes were in the opposite direction, and (hopefully) so were the results.

Since we are over 3/4ths done with this years' class, I would like your opinion of how a team comprised entirely of this years' class 'quality-wise' would do in C-USA.

Can this class *4 win championships and go to meaningful bowl games?
