Last night's crowd shows that if there is a game worth watching at GJF, people will come. Granted, there were many TCU fans in the house, but SMU can draw 30,000 on a consistent basis, provided the team is competitive and entertaining.
It was very deflating to watch the team essentially not show up last night. We SMU fans have seen this a number of times when the Ponies are simply outmatched. Us old-schoolers get a little more grumpy b/c we remember the Gregg/Rossley teams that had no business being on the field with Wisconsin, UCLA and North Carolina and playing them toe-to-toe for four quarters.
Let's just say this about the simplified run-and-shoot that they are feeding BLM: It looks like the other team knows what is coming on EVERY play. And, we have no threat in the running game at all. UH always had a great back in its John Jenkins run-and-shoot. So, we all know the process is going to take time. But, the defense is perhaps more disappointing (66.7 percent on third-down coversions). It's a bad combination that has us staring down the barrel of a 1- or 2-win season -- again.
As for the game presentation, SMU is playing in Ford Stadium for the ninth season. I think it's about time that the most glaring "ear-sore" be fixed already: The sound system. Plus, why does it happen over and over that the band is being drowned out by either piped in music or the PA announcer? C'mon guys, get this fixed. There are no excuses in Year 9.
Combine that with a pretty bad on-field performance and you're killing yourselves to bring people to the stadium that simply are not ever going to come back.
