2009 Recruiting

Postby Mustangsabu » Thu Sep 25, 2008 4:21 pm

I see we are ranked 51st. Third in our Conferneces (Houston 35, and UCF 50) and only two behind TCU.

Scout really isn't as reliable as Rivals in this arena. The ponystampede site is fantastic for SMU content, but the Scout system really isn't that great for recruiting. Rivals is far more level-headed (I'm a subscriber to both). The best way to evaluate a recruiting class isn't by class rank, but offers from other schools. Take TCU for example. Scout has their class only 2 spots above ours, yet their class as a whole has a slew of offers from BCS conference teams while our class has maybe 8 to 12 BCS offers among our entire class. I'm not saying it isn't improved from what we were given under Bennett, but don't kid yourself by thinking we are going to end up with a class anywhere near what TCU will have.
Back off Warchild seriously.

This is how unjustified Cheerleading and unrealistic expectations are spawned on this board. Generally comes back to bite you in the [deleted] in September

Listen [deleted], I NEVER said we were going to set the world on fire this year. In fact, in defense of most of the posters on this board, when we decided to start a true freshman quarterback, our expectations of wins-losses was reduced. Had Willis started the season we'd still be 1-3, but I think we'd have a fighting chance to win 4 games and finish at 5-7. Not a bad first year. With things as they are and BLM as our QB for the rest of the year, I don't see us winning another game. There is an outside chance of 3 total wins, but I don't see us going to El Paso and beating UTEP.

The problem I have (and many others) is just how far we have to go. Offensively we are dreadful. Defensively we are also dreadful. The lack of size and athleticism on both lines is stunning. We have a QB who has had all the confidence drained out of him by a coach who is throwing him to the wolves before he even has a chance at success. This is not what I expected. Now, we have our conference schedule ahead of us and dammit I want us to improve! We havent improved a bit from game 1 to game 4 aside from a semi-decent defensive performance against Tech on the road and we still have up 43 points and a mile of passing yards. Offensively we are even worse! Please just give us something tangible to say "hey, we are better at this now than we were" because right now every Bennett team would crush this team.

In fairness I think that the very concept of "cheerleading" involves a certain level of unjustifiable-ness, because if it was justified you one would not need someone to lead it, cheering would just happen.

And as for being bitten in the posterior in September (or any other month), I bear my cheeks in such fashion to the Gods on a regular basis.

PB's first full class was an improvement as well. Until they all left SMU.

haha so true. The majority of his 3-stars never or barely touched the field and left. Other than Sturdivant, most of his better players were 2-stars
