Modest Defensive Improvement

Postby Stallion » Sat Oct 04, 2008 6:11 pm

they didn't look like the worst defense in America-but that's as far as I'll go. UCF's two QBs were simply AWFUL-TERRIBLE and really couldn't exploit our weaknesses except for the one play where we decided to let a WR run 25 yards free in the secondary. UCF is a bad team offensively but has a few athletes on defense. That's the first RB to run over 100 this season but I still think there was modest improvement because of better tackling and tougher play. Still think we'll see more modest improvement on defense but I bet we don't see a more inept offense as UCF. That was a winnable game.

Tulsa on the other hand is gonna wear SMU out because they can exploit our defensive weaknesses about as well as any team in the country. If we can hold Tulsa under 40 it would be a minor miracle.

Tulsa is going to wipe our @ss all over the field. What a joke that will be.

Agreed. The D looked pretty darn okay.

I thought it was a pretty good defensive effort. Yes, there were the usual blown tackles and coverages, but we did look better. They were getting pressure on the QB, they were except for one play, plugging the gaps on the run and frustrating UCF's running game.

UCF's quarterbacks weren't very good, that's true, but I'll contend that our defense had something to do with that. Derrius Bell and Bryan McCann did a nice job on the corners. Youri Yenga continued to be the best undersized DE alive, and it was good to see Dizer and Handy get sacks. I still want to see Taylor Thompson and Patrick Fleming and Evan Huahulu get more playing time.

We didn't have a great day defensively by any means, but we showed signs of life.

Coming into the game, UCF was averaging 15 points per game, 5th worst in D1-A.

They DOUBLED their point production versus us.

That modest improvement by the D will quickly fade next weekend.

Anyone else notice, true freshman db #28 Keith Robinson getting some playing time? (on at least one series) And, Taylor Thompson did get some action, when Dizer went down in the 4th quarter. And those that have been asking why DeVon Bailey doesn't get in there more, well, that was DeVon chasing the UCF receiver (15 yards behind) into the endzone, on the 3rd and 20 play.
