The real problem

No pride...these kids are just playing for a free education...I really think they couldn't care less if they succeed.

I just can't understand this. Why is it that everyone understood that this was a must-win game except the team itself?

You would think that in a situation where you're in the 4th quarter on the 30 with 6 minutes remaining, with a chance to score a TD or at LEAST tie up the game, our guys could understand the critical importance of winning a game like this and dig a little deeper to get the job done, not just for the team, but for the SMU faithful who've been standing behind them for all these dismal years. All we ask for is a little pride...just one win over a team whose nickname is not the Golden Hurricanes.

A win over Baylor last night could have ignited a much needed spark, however small, in the team, the fans and the school, that might have led to enough enthusiasm to carry SMU to a winning season. You cannot, however, consider yourself a team headed in the right direction if you can't even beat a Baylor.

What will it take to get this team righted? I refuse to believe that a school with as much football tradition and past recognition and achievement cannot muster the ability to at least get to that next level. The air is quickly seeping out of the Bennett balloon, though. I don't know if I can take another Cavan era.

I will commend the defense, and concede that the refs really hurt us with bad calls. But that wasn't the sole reason for the loss...stupid mistakes, poor special teams and vanilla offense killed us.

Please, for the love of God, win!!

It is a sure sign that we have become a bunch of losers when we blame bad calls for sufferings. As for the team, better game plans and a good QB would help a lot. I, too, think we have another Cavan era on our hands. Keep Bennet as a recruiting coach only.

I wouldn't blame the refs for the loss...I am simply saying that they didn't help us with their calls...you have to admit the roughing the passer calls and face mask calls were pretty petty...Bottom line is that if we had what it took, petty ref calls wouldn't matter.

Your team may not be at the level you want, but your band sure is. Enjoyed the post-game concert by the Mustang Band.

A note to ECHOTHAT1...You evidently have your head up your a** making comments such as the players are here for a "..free education..." they "..couldn't care less..".Free education would translate to receiving a diploma without providing anything in return, cash or otherwise.I won't bore you with the hours these atheletes put in YEAR round including holidays,week-ends.The beating, both physically and mentally, they take on both the practice and playing field. The risk of injury that they are exposed to.If they didn't "care less", they'd all take a hike. A football scholarship is not a free ride.If you had half a clue, you wouldn't make irresponsible comments in this open forum. If you'd like to make your observations personnaly to team members, let me know and I'll arrange it....

Rediculous comments. This team stayed in town to work out for just a FREE education...

Total BS.

The players have tons of pride. They bust their asses every week. Never question their motivation-- you don't know any of these guys if you think that.

As much as I love this team, it really boils down to talent. The play calling sucks, but the talent is to blame.. we have no threats at WR, and you want to open up the offense?

I think we should run as much as we are, but I REALLY think we should be going with rotating backs. If Fitz is so good, why are we wasting a year of his eligibility on the bench watching KK dig in for 100 yards on a good night?

The conservative game plan is helping Bartel limit his mistakes, but I also think Bartel isn't going to learn if this system stays the same every week. Let this kid throw up the gut and utilize our short recievers. Forget the INT's--I like the tradeoff.

Listen, I may have been blowing off a little too much steam by my comments (and, yes, I do know that our guys have pride), but I knew some players when I was there in the early 90s who weren't exactly trying to make the NFL. Sure, they wanted to win, if possible, but at the end of the day, if they lost, they just had an extra cigarette and/or jack and coke that night. The players I knew were thinking more about their business careers than focusing on beating Tech or Baylor. Just look at David Page and Kelan Luker...deny that and its YOU that has your head up your a**.

Look, I am DYING for SMU to start winning some games. And I believe in them...I just want them to show us fans that they believe in themselves. I will try to have more faith in them and won't have my hopes too high for the OSU game. But, gosh, I've been going through this for 12 years now. Unless you can shed some new light on what it will take to get us turned around, I think my comments aren't so far out there. And PLEASE don't tell me to wait until 2008!!

The answer is always wait another 2 years. Some of us may not have another 2 years to enjoy seeing a winning team.

To insinuate that Luker and Page were basic goof offs only interested in their business careers is just a continuing line of BS by someone who hasn't a clue about whats going on with the team or its players. Page left because he'd graduated, was a family man with a child and needed to support that family. He played his a** off when he was playing. Luker lost interest by being jerked around by the system also the spring injury didn't help his enthusiasm. Its time for the fans to either fully back this team or watch the Cowboys...Talk about what year the team will be successful doesn't help the overall morale of this team. If you want to make the predicters of a 3 win(or worse) season correct, keep up the general criticism of todays teams players. This team was pumped before the Tech game. They get their butts kicked. They get up for the Baylor game knowing the implications of a loss, bottom TEN of Div 1 and general embarrassment, again lose. How do they get up for OSU??? We've got people on this board saying lets just forget about the game.I think this board is a pretty good cross section of the fan base and I'm sad to see the general negative tone of the comments. Some of the comments and posters belong on the other board which Stallion suggested I leave last year which I gladly did.I seemed to be an irritant with my requests for more positive attitude towards present players and staff.I guess I still am....
