SMU: Champions at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

Postby BRStang » Sat Oct 18, 2008 10:59 pm

Yay!

Seriously, I only followed the game by checking on yahoo gamechannel periodically, but I called it in the 1st Q in front of everyone at my buddy's house watching LSU/S. Carolina (when prompted). I didn't (and couldn't) watch a single play of the SMU game, but I knew they'd find a new way to lose no matter how long they were up. Really sad.

I've taken the jtstang approach with an added twist this season--I actually expect a loss AT ALL TIMES. I feel no pain anymore. Everyone here should try it.

Okay. Sorry. Rant over. I'm just tired of having to explain to a room full of LSU fans why my alma mater always loses at fb and why I still have an SMU license plate frame on my vehicle. :x

you simply have to have a sense of humor about it. My co-workers look forward to reports of how we managed to blow another game - I'm sure they all saw the scores on the ticker and that SMU lead most of the night, but everyone has come to expect this from SMU.

It's what we do..it's what makes us "special" in the world of college football.

Go into every game expecting a loss and you will never be disappointed but sometimes surprised!

Sort of like jtstangs position, except you are at least truthful enough to admit that you expect a loss. jt keeps trying to tell everyone he has NO expectation...really?
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

PK,

I am realistic to expect losses for a period of time. I am 100% behind JJ and think everyone needs to lay off until he's had time to bring in his players under his system. But at a point in the future, 2, maybe 3, years it's gonna be time for June to "pony up" in the win column.

My remarks were aimed at my friend jtstang. :)

No doubt it will be a process to get to consistant winning, but these last two games were heartbreakers...so close yet no cigar.

When one has a defense that gives up a mere 30 points in the second half, one will have problems winning.

I was watching ESPN to see the score updates and when I saw the score as 36-23 with 4:44 left in the 4th quarter, I thought, that's too close for comfort. Then I saw the score was 38-36 with 2:22 left in the game, and I thought, we'll lose. Then I saw the final 44-38 and thought we gave up 21 points in 4 minutes, Wow, you almost have to try to do that. That was after watching the Navy/Pitt game on TV where the Pitt defense smothered Navy's offense and my mind raced back to that first Phil Bennett game with Navy when they crushed us and we couldn't stop the option offense. And I thought, well at least Phil learned something.
