From a previous post about the UH game:

5 reasons UH will win by >/= 14 points

1) SMU's blown coverages. That will count for at least one easy TD (UH +7)
2) Stupid penalties. Stupid penalties will plague SMU all night but at least once stupid penalties will not only kill one drive, but completely change field advantage over to UH. The results will be at minimum an UH field goal. (UH +10)
3) Dropped passes. SMU will drop at least one sure TD (SMU -7, UH +17)
4) SMU’s poor tackling. At least once, a UH runner will look like Godzilla thundering through downtown Tokyo. Hapless arm tackles and poor angles will make some UH player's highlight reel (UH +24)
5) Interceptions. At least one interception will be toss for a UH TD. Whether it is a desperation throw into coverage or a gimme pitch to a UH defensive lineman, SMU will turnover an interception for a TD. (UH +31)

UH will earn at least two TDs without SMU's assistance and SMU will get a TD and field goal in the first half followed by another 'great' comeback that comes up short in the second half. However, the results will be a 14+ advantage for UH when the final gun sounds.

We did improve enough to win except in two categories.

1) We didn't blow any coverages. We didn’t give up a cheap TD cause our guys were confused or lined up wrong.

2) Dropped passes. We caught all possible TD passes. We did have one very significant drop on a third and short with less then 3 minutes to play.

3) Interceptions. None were returned for a TD. IN fact, one could argue that the interceptions were not due to mistakes at all.

However, we got slaughter by the other two areas we need to improve.

4) Poor tackling. We would hit a UH running back at the LOS and get him down 6 yards later. We simply didn't hit people and drop them in their tracks. This happened on pass receptions as well.

5) Penalties. We had a chance to score and once again stupid penalties killed us. We scored at the end of the 3rd quarter, we have a chance to UH away and we get a personal foul on the KO return and a roughing the passer on a 3rd and incomplete.

Two things killed us, an inability to tackle and stupid stupid stupid penalties.

We have improved on 3 categories now if we improve on one of the remaining two categories; we have a chance to beat a mediocre team.

Sounds like whoever posted this originally knew our team fairly well.

Glad to see that we're (hopefully) growing out of all that nonsense.

As I stated in another thread I have given up on this team being able to tackle one on one. Originally I thought it was just poor technique, but I have come to believe it is just lack of size and strength. Only Bell and Yenga can consistently tackle one on one. The tackling has improved, but that is because we are swarming to the ball and gang tackling better. My high school team had the same problem. The defense was out manned and we compensated in the same way - more hats on the ball carrier. Alas, that means when a receiver gets into the secondary as happened at the end of the game he turns a 10 yard gain into a 40 or so yard gain and sets up a touchdown.

But, boy stupid penalties really cost us points on both sides of the ball. These guys have got to learn what the whistle means.

I thought we would have a rash of stupid penalties like false starts and holding. I never imagined we would double down on personal fouls. Those are the absolute stupidest of stupid penalties.

The coverages were not blown. They were just not executed well. Anytime you have a LB covering a running back on a fly route there will be trouble if the line does not get to the QB.

The first TD was covered by Robinson, not blown. Just not covered well.

There is a big difference in those plays and the ones we have been giving up with no one covering a receiver running free down the field.

Getting beat in man to man is an error of athletism. We can live with that as it isn't a mental error. Blown coverages are mental errors (lining up wrong, missing a man in an area of coverage, thinking the secondary is in one coverage when it is actually in another coverage). Athletic errors are not going to be fixed by next week. Mental errors which manifest themselves as blown coverages can be fixed in a week.

"Ok, this may sound corny, but I guess it needs to be said.

I started at SMU in September of 1992. I started working for Bill Weidner, Athletic Recruiting Coordinator, on my first day of classes. I spent all four undergrad years and one grad school year (Clovis Hale hired me as his GA) working under Coach Tom Rossley to make the SMU football program as good, as strong, and as winning a program as I could.

As an alumni and now a member of the Mustang Club, I want the Ponies to win as much as anyone. I love our players. I consider them my little brothers. My points about bad play or bad coaching decisions or whatever are because I see things when I watch games that make me crazy. One other thing... I spent time as a scout in the NFL, so I do have experience in this area.

Just thought I'd vent a little and let all the Pony parents know that I support you all.
