Serious questions for Mustang fans...

1. Has any of you felt that SMU got it's money worth so far with JJ's coaching performance? I know what your record is but is wondering if JJ's record is any indication of his coaching performance or is it lack of talent? I know good coaching doesn't always equat to winning teams.
2. Did many of you expect the same turn around for SMU that JJ gave Hawaii his first year?
3. Do you feel that SMU should have hired Paul Johnson (Georgia Tech) instead of June Jones?
4. What is the magic number of wins for next year doesn't JJ have to accomplish to assure him of a third season?

I think we all know JJ has 5 yrs to get it done here and judging from his predecessors' experience, he may need every bit of those 5 years.
Looks to me like our schedule is set up for that 5th year to be make or break time. The entire roster will be Jones recruits, so we shall see.

Looks like things are right on schedule. Most here predicted 3 or 4 wins this year and it is possible we will get there. Should already be there but that is the way things go. So how is Hawaii' doing? About where you thought it would be? Going to keep your new coach?

Think most of us expected a few more wins, maybe that we'd have 3 at this point. That's ok.
Think we need to win around 5 next year for it to be a good progression.
Definitely glad we have JJ over Paul Johnson. Think Paul Johnson wouldn't have had much more success with this team - and we wouldn't have as good of recruits coming in.

1) Definitely lack of talent
2) I said 5-7 if we overachieved, which would've meant JJ pulled off a coup like he did at UH. I said 2-10 is a realistic possibility, which I still think we can get.
3) Definitely JJ..besides PJ said no to SMU, so it was either JJ or Fran
4) JJ isn't going anywhere unless he decides to go somewhere.

First, it isn't my money so I believe we have gotten everything and more for the money I put up. Second, we have sucked for so long that it will take a minor miracle to turn it around in less than five years.
The team looks better prepared. We can't execute but we don't look like a completely addled Jr High team.
We are light years ahead in the recruiting game thus far. That is one reason to hope things get a tad better.
We are young so we do have the potential of kids getting bigger, stronger and faster by next year. That in combination with their experience and what appears to be a better prepared team is reason for hope.

Ponyte,
Rivals aka Stallion thinks this class will be ranked in the 75th to 80th range; don't know if I would call that light years ahead.
BTW, I think Stallion is pretty dang accurate in his rankings, he certainly has the track record.

1. NO
2. Not the same - but better than what has been done so far
3. NO
4. Doesn't matter - will be here a 3rd season regardless of what happens next year.

4. What is the magic number of wins for next year doesn't JJ have to accomplish to assure him of a third season?[/quote]
Zero. The magic number of games that Jones has to win next year, in order to return for a third season, is zero. He'll be back, and nothing short of a scandal on the level of Dave Bliss at Baylor will change that. The man is unfireable.
SMU cannot afford to pay 6 million dollars to buy out his contract. The men who pledged money to cover his contract aren't going to pay for a coach who's been fired. Thus, JJ is our coach for 5 years, win, lose, or draw.
Some of the bloom is off the rose, alot of people hoped for an instant turn around like he accomplished at Hawaii. Some of us are scratching our heads at the benching of Justin Willis. This season could possibly turn out statistically worse than last year. However, I think most of us saw some real progress, particularly in our last 2 home games. Some people are frustrated, but no one seems to want to fire Jones, even if it were possible. Our last 2 home games are winnable.
If SMU wins less than 5 games next year, fans will grumble, but Jones isnt in any danger of being fired (and forced to take his measly little 10 million dollar contract back to Hawaii, where he can retire and sit on his porch and watch the sunset every evening).
That's the bottom line, because XTC said so.
