The only team that SMU has defeated this season (so far) won the Southland Conference today with a win over my Sam Houston State Bearkats. The Bobcats now go into the FCS playoffs.

Kiss the TX State Bobcats goodbye in the FCS playoffs after this weekend:

The University of Montana Grizzly football team will play Texas State in the first round of the playoffs Saturday at noon at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula.

The Grizzlies (11-1) were seeded No. 4 in the 16-team field, which means they are assured of hosting two games if they can defeat Texas State (8-4), which actually was the No. 2 team in the Southland Conference behind Central Arkansas, which isn't eligible for the playoffs.

Montana shared the Big Sky Conference championship with Weber State (9-3) with 7-1 league records, but Weber State received the automatic bid to the playoffs. The Wildcats, who lost Saturday at home to Eastern Washington, will travel to Cal Poly (8-2) Saturday.

The winner of the Weber State-Cal Poly game would play the winner of the UM-Texas State contest on Dec. 6 in the second round.

We're lucky we played Texas State early in the season. They improved by 100 times and would demolish us it we had to play them now.

I mean, we just plain suck.

We were lucky to win that game. TX State did not even have to punt.

Unfortunately after leading 10-0 and dominating most of the first half Montana woke up and won 31-13. Still ended up 8-5 on the year. We did improve a great deal over the course of the season. The low point was Southern Utah, two weeks after the SMU game, but after that the team really got their act together putting up huge offensive numbers, still not as much defense as we should have had but we ended up winning a lot of shootout games, lost a couple too. I still loved coming to Dallas. Our game with you was very frustrating seeing the team self destruct and losing a game we should have won at the time and I certainly hope we can do it again some day either at your house or our new one when it's done.
