Patterson to Tennessee?

ESPN radio had a blurb today saying Tennessee hopes to have a new coach by next week, and that the three candidates are Lane Kiffin (as discussed elsewhere on this board), Cincinnati's Brian Kelly and ... TCU's Gary Patterson? They did say Kiffin appears to be the leader at the moment, but I just don't see Gary P. fitting in with the Vols. He's done a nice job at Froggy High, but SEC football is a different animal than anything he'll encounter anywhere in the country.

You're right...they have the best defenses in the SEC...way out of his league.

Patterson mentioned in the paper that he hasn't been answering Clemson's and Tennessee's calls and has no intention of doing so.

Patterson is a good coach, but he is not a hot choice for a very picky SEC program that likens itself to Alabama, LSU, and Florida as one of the premier programs of the SEC. He would probably not have the kind of outpouring of support of a "name" coach like Kiffen. Now if Kiffen turned them down, he might start looking better.

Well of course he has. Every coach says that before accepting a new position, or at least before his current team's season is over.

I don't think Tennessee sniffs Patterson (ew....), beyond perhaps a cursory phone call to his agent to kick the tires. But the 100,000-plus who pack Neyland Stadium won't exactly be giddy with anticipation if they pick up the papers and read that Patterson is coming to town. He's not a bad coach, but I have to believe they're aiming higher.

At least we don't have to worry about our football coach or men's basketball coach going anywhere in the near future..........
